It's a rare occurance that I get to watch TV. Let alone have time to sit through the commercials, but last night I saw 2 Commercials directly encouraging use of Google's Giant Social Network ... Google+
If you haven't seen these, take a moment and watch them. If you have, are you considering ALL THE WAYS Innkeepers can keep in touch and share via social channels with your current and future guests?

Mid Atlantic Innkeepers Trade Show and Conference Has a New Website!
Pete Holladay, coordinator for the Mid Atlantic Innkeepers Trade Show and Conference, knew he needed a new, easier to edit website, so that he could keep all of the innkeepers and associated partners aware of new information for the conference.
Pete worked with Acorn Internet Services Staff to build a new, exciting site with photo galleries, videos and a lot more information for the Conference attendees. Take a look:
Said Pete:
"Everyone is so excited about our new website! They love the Gallery and the layout of the Schedule. It is so easy to navigate! Thank you, Acorn, for doing such a fine job. Special kudos to Sharon, Pam and Willie whose patience with me was almost exhausted!"
We are happy to have a had a hand in making the Mid-Atlantic Innkeeper site easier to use, and we hope to see many of you at the conference this year!

Good Process Contributes to New Design for Manchester, NH Bed and Breakfast
Acorn IS has refined our processes for new custom site designs over the years, with the goal to make the procedures of web site building as painless as possible for our clients. We want the customer's personality and desired look and feel to be very apparent, but also to make it easier on the client.
Darlene and Eric Johnston of Ash Street Inn, a Manchester, NH bed and breakfast, recently launched a new site:
When I asked Eric for a quote for this blog, I was delighted to receive this:
"We really love the new site and I've even made my first update to the innkeeper's corner! Everything works great, looks good and has the simple, easy feel that we wanted. Darlene and I, especially the "I" part, were reluctant to see the old website go. We had it built in 1999 and liked its simplicity and ease of use and really didn't think it needed much change. Well, it's only been up for 5 weeks and I'm kicking myself for not having it done years ago. It is still simple and easy to navigate but the "WOW" factor is immense. New guests just love the pictures and the ability to check availability so easily while our returning guests keep telling us how much better it represents our Inn. The whole process was smooth and professional but the folks at ACORN truly captured the "feel" that we wanted to maintain while bringing the site into the 21st century. With the SEO work that was done and ability to now make most of our changes ourselves for no additional cost or bother, our site can really be an asset for us to use to reach new markets and keep our long-time guests abreast of the happenings at the Inn and in Manchester, NH. We're taking advantage of some of the training aids that ACORN makes available an hope to use many more over the next few months. Many thanks to the folks at ACORN - having a good process that works for the client is a wonderful thing!"
We are absolutely thrilled that Darlene and Eric are so happy with the new site, as I know they were very attached to the "old" site, and that our process was helpful and simple for them!

New Year's Resolutions - Start Planning NOW! (Day 5)
New Years Resolution - Day 5
I’d like to wrap up our 5 day series of New Year’s Resolutions with one last and final thought. Innkeepers today MUST be aware of their Basic Internet Surroundings.
Whether you hire a professional to help you with your ongoing marketing, or you DIY (Do-It-Yourself) you have to be aware of the basic “happenings” that continue to occur on the internet that impact your business.
There is truly only one way to do this. It’s through Continuing Education. Internet Marketing continues to change on a daily basis; you have to keep learning to provide yourself the awareness of the opportunities and dangers involved in doing business on the web.
So, for your New Year’s Resolution #5, I encourage you to get involved in a Continuing Education program that best fits your needs. And stick with it. As we have said for nearly a decade now. Knowledge is Power.

New Year's Resolutions - Start Planning NOW! (Day 4)
New Years Resolution - Day 4
Web Site Presence
I thought I’d start this resolution with everyone who has already kept it. So --- If you have already released a new Web site design in the past 18-24 months, with Professional Photography, and quality on-page SEO (Search Engine Optimization) your New Years resolution is to make sure you are tracking your Gross Revenue on a monthly basis and comparing it to the same month a year ago, as you smile all the way to the bank!
Now, on to those Innkeepers who have older site designs, with snapshot photos that are simply missing the wow-factor, let’s chat for a moment. We have heard our fair share of I don’t need to update my site because “My guests tell me they LOVE my site!”
If I may suggest another way of looking at WHO is LOVING your site. It’s your GUESTS. It's that portion of the populace that decided to book with you. But what about the other XX% of "Could-Have-Been" Guests that DIDN'T choose to book with you, but chose another Inn in town that impressed them more with their online presence.
I’d wager that almost every time we release a new Web site design, at about the 4-6 week mark the Innkeeper tells us that looking back, they should never have hesitated or waited to build a new design. That their business has increased, almost immediately, once the new site has gone live. Some even tell us that their new Web site pays for itself in 4-6-8 weeks after it has gone live.
So, if I may encourage those of you with older sites to seriously consider new Photography and a New, Fresh, Web site design in 2012. Make your 4th Resolution in 2012 to see that your Web site joins the 21st century!

"Acorn was recommended by a fellow B & B owner. They took what was a boring, white, two sentence website that had absolutely no SEO and what emerged was a wonderful butterfly, with words that matter, that web crawlers see. By attending their webinars and online learning center I too feel as if I have emerged from my lack of knowledge. I didn't know what I didn't know about SEO.” [READ MORE]

"In spite of a difficult economy, we have had a great year. I think the fact that we are Acorn clients has a great deal to do with this. We had a new site built this year, which had a significant impact on our occupancy. The new site, combined with my on-going participation in and commitment to Club 60, and what I have learned from Acorn U Webinars is helping me to maintain a necessary presence on the internet.” [READ MORE]

It has been a great forum to learn cutting edge concepts and has increased our web traffic and conversion rate."

New Year’s Resolutions – Start Planning NOW! (Day 3)
New Years Resolution - Day 3
Mobile Web Site Presence
According to the Google Guidelines document, a Mobile site should be either a) built to support a different Mobile format than your desktop site or b) be coded to switch the content display to a Mobile format. Did you know that just last month according to a Neilsen Report, over 50% of individuals 44 years old and younger own smart phones? That means if the majority of your guests are under 45, know that more than half of them now own smartphones. It’s also interesting to note that for some number of these users, tablets and smartphones are their primary internet devices.
So... if you have already have had a Mobile version of your Web Site designed and installed online according to Google’s Guidelines --- then Great JOB!
And your New Years Resolution #3 is to watch your Google Analytics Mobile Traffic Grow and Grow in the New Year!
But... if you haven't yet climbed aboard the Mobile site bandwagon, we’d suggest you watch our Mobile Introduction Video and seriously consider a Mobile Website as your #3 New Years Resolution for 2012.
This past year not only did we follow the Acorn Marketing Planner but we also added a mobile site. Our mobile site has put us ahead of our competition. This is a must in today's world. We are up over $25,000 this year ... our best year ever! [Read More]

New Year’s Resolutions – Start Planning NOW! (Day 2)
New Years Resolution - Day 2
Simply refer to your Google Analytics and you'll see that Local (Geo-Specific) search phrases are a huge part of your FREE listing traffic. That is... assuming you are on page one (or close to it) for your City + State + Bed and Breakfast phrases.
Local Business Listing have been around for a few years, but in October 2010 they took over Organic Listings with a vengeance, merging Organic listings with Local results. Today, both your Organic placement and Local placement have to be top notch or your listing will fall to a lower position.
So... if you have already CLAIMED your Local Listings, and continue to update your Local Listings monthly --- then Great JOB!
And your New Years Resolution #2 is to KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
But... if you haven't yet Claimed your listing, or haven't made any updates to it in "you can't remember when", then we'd like to suggest that you add this action item to your New Year's Resolution list.

Acorn has given us amazing industry knowledge with their ongoing educational programs… Through Acorn, our online marketing has been given a tremendous boost and our increased occupancy is a testament to that fact.
If you are an innkeeper and you market your inn online through your website, social media and the like, or if you are thinking about doing so, signing up for these classes will be the best investment you could possibly make.

I've had to teach myself the ins and outs of SEO and social media marketing.

Blogger Image Changes - What You Need to Know
Google Blogger has made a few updates in the past months. One of the updates which may have an effect on your blog's appearance is that Blogger images are now stored in Picasa web albums.
If you have your images stored in Picasa albums, you must load the images as "public". If you do not load your photos as public, they will appear as a large black square with a line through it.
Also, if you have signed up for Google +, DO NOT DELETE your Picasa Albums when you view them in Google +. If you do, you will not be able to retrieve your Blog images and will have to re-load every single image, as your blog images are now stored in Picasa.

Set up Your Google + Business Page (VIDEO)
As requested, please see a quick video on how to set up a Google + page for yourself, and then for your business:
In my opinion, there is no "should I?" involved in setting up a Google + page for your business. It's a must. I also recommend adding a Google + button to your site. Contact your webmaster to add that button to your site.

Google + for Business Now Available
Google has now released Google + (Google Plus) for business pages.
Start here: http://www.google.com/+/business/
Most Acorn customers will choose the "Local Business" designation. Make sure you read the terms and conditions.
Google + for business has several nice features:
Publish - similar to Facebook, you can share information via your stream content- let people know about specials, or what is happening in your area.
Hangouts- this is a very cool function which allows you to set up one-click video chat with your customers. It also incorporates Google Docs if you want to collaborate with a colleague- say for an associational meeting or a link exchange with another business.
Circles - circles will be available on Business pages as they are on personal Google +. You can split people into different circles- such as Employees, Customers, etc.
Google + Badge - this easy to get badge connects people directly to your Google + page from your website. Of course, you want to keep your Google + buttons so that people can recommend your website pages not only on Google + but as you may have noticed, in Google search itself:
Direct Connect is a feature that still seems to be in testing mode and is not yet widely available to all users. This is a search function which will allow users to enter '+' followed by the name of your page in Google search to get directly to your Google+ page.
Ripples - from Google: "Word travels fast online. Ripples let you see your posts spread across Google+, who’s sharing and resharing your content, and whose opinions matter. Use it to identify influencers and add them to a circle, or see how communities are formed around your content."
Social Analytics - Google Analytics social marketing suite.
Coming Soon: On-Page analytics for Plus 1 and Google + for pages, as well as API Integrations for developers.
Don't delay- follow the link above and get your business on Google +.

Google Releases Freshness Update
On November 3rd, Google released a new update to their ranking algorithm. The update is meant to give very recent, fresh and relevant results to searches. The example given in the Google Search blog is for the Olympics. If you were searching for the Olympics, you are probably going to want the most recent Olympics news. Google will return you results for the latest information, rather than historical information about the Olympics.
When we think of recent news, our thoughts automatically go to blogging and social media, as these are the best ways for an average small business owner to get more recent information out to the public. So when you write your blog post, and use great anchor text such as "your city, your state bed and breakfast" for a link to your home page, your post will be the most recent information about the topic, and have a better chance of returning results for your query.
SEOMOZ's famous Whiteboard Friday was all about this new update last Friday. Rand and Mike talked about the effect of social media on recent results:
Mike: It doesn't seem to be like a one-to-one thing, so it's hard to say. Maybe they're looking at shared or how much is being pushed on social.
Rand: Google+.
Mike: Exactly, Google+, how many people are pressing that magic +1 button. So it's hard to say, but I would venture to guess that they're thinking about social, because if it's the most relevant, it makes more sense that it's shared the most.
Looking at it from this angle, it makes sense to make sure you've made it easy for people to share your content by adding the Facebook Like, Google + and Twitter share buttons to your blog.

Santa Fe Hotel Loves New Look and Feel of Website
Casa De Tres Lunas, or House of the Three Moons, is a Santa Fe, NM Hotel that had an old website that didn't work properly. Owner Melody Taft really loved the colors and feel of her old site, but was finding it more and more difficult to update it and keep it current.
Melody had been a customer of Acorn for quite a while when we started her new design project. She really wanted to keep the colors of her original website, as they remind her of the colors of the desert, which is the beautiful setting for the inn:
Melody said:
"I am pleased with the new updated look of my site. Acorn was able to keep the look and feel that I loved about my old web site while making it more user friendly and easier to navigate. They were willing to listen to me and follow what I felt my site needed."
We wish Melody continued success with her lovely inn and new web site!

Introducing “The Smart Innkeeper Series”
As part of our Acorn University Video Making webinar last week, I put together a fun little "Fairy Tale Classic" video about the "3 Little...Innkeepers?" You’ll find it at the end of this post!
Obviously, the moral of the story is, everyone wants to be like the 3rd Little Innkeeper, whose Web site has withstood all the huffing and puffing of the “big, bad, search engine wolf”.
That way they could make sure they were covering all of today’s standard requirements for quality Web site design, integrated on-page SEO and ongoing SEO and Marketing Plans.
So, with that thought in mind, we developed...
That said, please take time to watch “The Smart Innkeeper Series” videos Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 as we release one each day this week. (Updated 10/28/2011: Links to each video are listed above.)
Download the RFP (Request for Proposal) Checklist for each topic, and feel free to share this information with any and all of your Innkeeper friends and acquaintances who might be looking to invest in a new design, on-page SEO or an ongoing SEO and Marketing Plan.
And, if there is anything we can do to help you with your online presence, please give us a call at 877-226-7699 or E-Mail us at sales@acorn-is.com We’d love to hear from you!

Obviously, the moral of the story is, everyone wants to be like the 3rd Little Innkeeper, whose Web site has withstood all the huffing and puffing of the “big, bad, search engine wolf”.
But that’s where I am finding so many Innkeepers can so easily get stuck.
- They know they need a new Web site design, but don’t think about including On-Page SEO (Search Engine Optimization) as part of the Design Process.
- Or they know they need Integrated On-Page SEO on their current design, but don’t think about the Ongoing SEO and Marketing Work to support their placement into the future.
- And some Innkeepers simply are unaware of what SEO is, it's impact on their placement, or even where to begin to construct an Ongoing Marketing Plan.
That way they could make sure they were covering all of today’s standard requirements for quality Web site design, integrated on-page SEO and ongoing SEO and Marketing Plans.
So, with that thought in mind, we developed...
