About a year ago I was turning some net-like sheers into curtains for my bathrooms and the material got down by the bobbin and jammed. Not a problem, I still have Mom's machine. Bring it down and used it a fair amount. Just recently got some very important items done up for DH (thank goodness). My kitchen curtains were 16 years old and looked it. Cannot buy new because of oddball window sizes. So a couple weeks ago I ordered a bolt of pretty yellow material to make new curtains. I get 3/4 done with the first pair (4 windows) and the machine goes into overdrive as I press the pedal but the needle does not move. However, I can turn the wheel by hand and it sews! I just finished the 3rd pair. One to go! (My wrist is getting sore! I got 60 inch wide fabric to make life simpler - at least it is only 2 panels per pair - no splicing this time.)
Daddy bought this machine for Mom while we were still on the farm in the 50s! I do not know if she ever had the belt replaced, but I am guessing that is what it needs. MY machine is about 10 years newer than Mom's. Now to find a sewing machine repair to get BOTH machines fixed.

Still using grandmother's 1920-something Singer. Doesn't go in reverse, no attachments, but sews like a dream.

Check your phone book for a local sewing machine/vacuum cleaner business.
I don't know where you are but in Western New York most of these businesses can find the parts for repairs and also give your machine a "tune-up".
Hope this helps.

im a bit spoilt as we are only a smallish town but have a sewing machine repair shop about 5 mins walk people come from all over to have their machines fixed there.

Both of my machines are Sears Kenmores. Mom's had the ability to do the most modern decorative stitching! Then mine had the latest and greatest cams - to be inserted to automatically do the fancy stitches (I do not even remember where that box of cams is!). DH knows of a man in the city to the north who does sewing machine repairs. It was just a timing thing - I FINALLY get down to making the darn curtains and the belt (I surmise) goes.

I can't recommend having a good sewing machine repairman enough.
And hey - before I got to my repairman last sprint (10), I sewed a bunch of light blocking curtains by hand. Desperate time scall for desperate measures! Fortunately, they were for private space where guests don't have access, so I didn't worry about fussy hems where the fabric didn't ravel. But I had some sore fingers by the time the casings were made.

These are for the kitchen so close to the same - rod pockets & hems. Just glad I got the sewing done for Himself BEFORE it decided to go belly-up. I am hoping he sees the repairman next week!
