Thanks Bommelhoeve! I got to listen to it. Cowap did a good job of questioning the TA rep and reminding her that what policing  they do of posted reviews takes place after the damage is done.

When he mentioned that people are taking money to post good reviews for some sites, all the TA rep could say was, "that's certainly against our policy". Lot of good that does!

The interview is a good start in making the public aware of the problems that exist.

this is really only a small thing it has been all over the BBC about how trading standards is bashing them and questioning their veracity and interviewing trip advier press people.

Thanks for the link. They used your quote in the news snippet also. Thank you to whomever said the time - I was able to move the dot to within a couple minutes of when you came on. You sounded great! You really got your point across.

thank you. was trying to show we are not all crazy people who run b&b's like some of the people you see on 3 in a bed! more we believe in reviews and communicating in an instant way with the public however we don't believe in reviews from people that may never even have stayed with us or that arn't policed in any way. Plus got some good mentiones apart from the fact they kept calling me a hotel which I suppose could be worce! Also am hoping that I am now on their go to list if they ever need a comment on tourism/accommodation type things which would be good pr for the future.

Just listened to your bit & the TA interview.  You did a wonderful job and identified many points for our industry.  And I also think that Cowap did a great job with his interview of the TA rep.  She was smooth but much of what she said sounded like canned replies to questions she would rather dodge.

Hope to have time to listen to hear any other call in statements made later in the show, but for now I have cleaning to do!

I found a 3-hour Cowap show from Friday the 3rd. I jumped through it twice, sampling section-by-section, hoping to happen on to a section about TA but never found it.

If I get time, I'll listen to the whole 3 hours, as it's like a free vacation to York, easy to imagine I'm driving along a country road, on the "wrong" side of the road, listening to York radio!

I did hear them discussing their love/hate relationship with the non-stop tourist business there. Wish we had a little of that problem here!

Edited to add; Well done, you did great.

In the mean time I'm enjoying the discussion on the Monk's Cross shopping center. It's the same thing we've faced here for 40 years: retail shopping moving to the edge of town with huge amounts of free, convenient parking, leaving a dead downtown area and dropping property values.

It brings us around to what I'm working on now, trying to redevelop our historic downtown district, with its narrow streets and limited parking, as a nice alternative to the big shopping centers that, after 40 years, are seeming to be dated and "nothing special". What's special, to people born after 1980, are the quaint city centers they've barely known existed!

Quite well I think! managed to get a small plug in for our national trade association Bedposts which is really trying to get our issues listened to!! Pushed the point that they are very unhelpful about namign names if you are trying to get at the real identity of people ie to sue them and that the simple way for trip adviser to make it more likely people are telling the truth is to make them say who they are. That there is no policing. Also said that I get emails sometimes twice a week from companies offering to write good reviews and post them in return for payment. So have to listen and see how it sounds on Sunday.

Yep, I have gotten those emails for better reviews too.

It's on tape? They want me to do mine live... gulp.

I've never had someone solicit for positive reviews. I've seen posts about it. But never received one, myself.

If anyone is interested (or just bored out of their minds with nothing else to do... goo.gl/Y3Tet at about 23:00

Incidentally, the review that they read out loud is this one... goo.gl/HmQR2 which is probably one of the BEST reviews of this particular property.

Wow. And we all wonder how come places like this all over the world are not shut down. At least the guests who booked thru online agencies should complain to them. And being asked to pay cash? Walk away. Especially in a 'first world' country. In a big city.

And it's not even the worst hotel! Oh, wait it is. The rest are unrated.

Oh... I think it's the worst in the whole country. It's number 748 in the province (and the last one rated in the whole province).

Do you know how they tell if they need to change sheets around there... they throw them against the wall and see if they stick!

Believe it or not, some poor government employee has to actually rate them every two years. But 1 star is the default lowest rank anyway.

I have done both. Either way, just think of it as talking to a friend. If it is something you are passionate about, you will not even have to really think about it being live. Do organize your thoughts in advance to know what points you want to make but just answer the questions with the excitement you feel about telling about it in your voice. Do not be a monotone mumbler. Speak up (not shout but do not mealy-mouth whimper either). Speak clearly and distinctly. Good luck.

I did a live radio interview once. I thought it was going to be 2-3 minutes. When I finally got off the phone, I'd been talking to them for 25 minutes. Must have been a slow news day!

I get those same emails about getting better reviews and how they can help me.

they seemed quite shocked that there were companies or people out there offering this as a service. If anyone has any student kids it could be a lucrative sideline for them! get a few friends organised $10 a pop its easy money could really help with tuition fees!

I get emails now and again but as well have had emails from people willing to pay money to you to write them for their company or teach them how to do it!. and no mine was taped so that was easier!

Good Luck!  The fake reviews really detract from the usefulness of TA.  I am sure they know this but have no way to actually control it.  Wouldn't hurt to mention those "review mill" sites to highlight the issue.  And of course, the blackmail-the-innkeeper issue that others have mentioned, as well as the unverified guest issue.

Let us know if we can listen in using our computers here in the USA.  I would love to hear what goes on!

Accuracy on our city page is a real problem and Trap A has zero interest in fixing it. There are B&B's listed as being 20 miles from us that are actually 40. There are properties that are listed in two categories (B&B and VR) and, because they want the revenue, they encourage the property to suggest it is two different places. NOT

Otherwise, you already know about the growing number of review mills that are pumping thousands of reviews onto retail sites and review sites at what?: $10 bucks a pop?

We have already stayed at a few properties where it was obvious they had paid or discounted to get good reviews. One highly rated place was so bad we had to leave after the first night. We use the Trap as follow up, but find we do much better if we use other tools first and then do a double check on the T RIP vi sor.

Sorry got off topic

Reminder- We use the site to it's fullest and it has been a beneficial marketing tool

Wonderful!! We are proud of you and know you will do well. The blackmailing, unverified reviews, and the way they just plain hide B &Bs from the public looking for a place to stay are the issues everywhere. Why is it Hotels and Motels and not Hotels, Motels, and B & Bs? They certainly know how to ask us to pay them for a listing.

Well done Cambs.

If it were me I would be a voice of clarity on the whole blackmail issue. Letting them know that innkeepers and hoteliers are business as usual, every once in a while a psycho stays at an inn.  Verifying REVIEWS should be required (at least) with negative reviews. !! that is something I would voice.  Also people reviewing who have never even stayed there, should also be outlawed.

the BBC don't really like trip adviser! so im not too worried the point I want to make loud and clear is yes this can be a tool to weed out the bad properties however it has many flaws. We as accommodation providers are not afraid of truthful reviews but we want the system policed so that people with an axe to grind cannot use it as a tool ie disgruntled employees and so on. Our main complaint is that you do not have to have ever stayed at the property and do not have to prove in anyway that you have. If it was any other medium it would be slander and you would be sued.

And the blackmail the uninitiated cringe from - give us what we want or we will write a bad review as well as the give me over-the-top goodies and I will write a good review and if you do not it will be a bad review.

There you go. That's the point. I would say that our bad reviews were about having an axe to grind. It wasn't that there wasn't hot water or the rooms were dirty or we lied about something, the guests just didn't like US so they slammed us online. It was personal, no doubt about it.

And that should never be allowed.  TA allows posters to use names and say untruthful, ugly (sometimes) things yet in the Mgr Reply there can be no pointing fingers or should I say 'setting the facts straight'.
