I've done this. I wouldn't attempt it when we guests because I don't think guests would appreciate seeing me come out of the room next door to them. I don't even like going down the hallway when guests are in their rooms.
We had one guest insist someone was standing outside their room listening to them and all I had done was gone out the front door! They didn't hear the door, just the footsteps. They assumed someone was lingering in the hallway and questioned us the next day as to who was in the house!

I have done this and that is why we put a double wall between the 2 rooms!

Yeah that is the thing isn't it, we don;t do it when we have guests, we do it AS A GUEST to test everything out, but really we should do it when there are other rooms occupied. But ain't happenin' here...
Re outside the room listening, we had guests once tell us someone kept trying to open their door. What can I do? Nothing, did they try or was it another door? Who knows. I believe people try to go into the other rooms thinking no one is in there and they are snooping. I know they go in if they are unlocked, which is why they all remain locked!
But, I agree this is a good idea, and pack up a bag like you would if you were on the road, don't just go in with your toothbrush. This is when you notice things like DUST on ceiling fan blades, oi.

Plus, when there are guests there are other rooms to clean! Last thing I want to do is clean up after me, too!

We did this a year ago. It was rather neat. I found out hey I like this place. Yes you can hear some one walk across one of the room floor. But hey your in a house after all. Yes I can hear a tv above one of the rooms .Some people like it louder then others. They all have their own entrances and bathrooms and decks . They have over 250 Squ Feet of living space. All things are working.taps not dripping Tolet paper extra roll in holder .Plunger in bathroom in case they need it. Cause they have put some thing in tolet that they should of not put in. They have every thing just have to bring their clothes. But it was a rather neat feeling being in your house and knowing how a guest must feel about your space. The only thing I missed out on was some one bring me breakfast. AND making up my bed.
To add to this I have the same problem in a hotel and a motel. You can hear loud people no matter where you stay. We just came back from a hoilday in a motor home you can hear people out side as they walk by. Unless you build your home with a B&B in mind you will never hit the perfect place. Even the more up scale hotel can be noise.
Friends built their B&B after a few years they sold that B&B and built another one with the lesson they learned from the first B&B.Need more rooms to make money. This year they Sold that home and now will build a new one that has suites only.Think at that point it will no longer be a B&B.
At that point I just buy a motel or cabins.

What are you supposed to do with all those pillows and comforters (especially when it’s 90 degrees out)? They get piled on chairs. I’m not suggesting you do away with them, they look gorgeous, but perhaps put a place aside where guests can put them. The places that have luggage racks generally get used for that oversized comforter and my luggage ends up on the floor, and the pillows I put on chairs, and then end up with no where to sit when I want to put shoes and socks on the next morning.
This is why I do not do shams etc. I want function and that is what works for me - I give my guests function. The silk rose petals are my "looks" and they do not take up a lot of space nor are they difficult to remove.

exactly what i said in the mattress thread! I slept in all the rooms

I've stayed in 60% of my rooms. The rooms that get the most repeat business I have yet to test, as they seem to not need a close eye. But like most others here, I have not stayed when there are guests for much the reasons already posted.
As far as space for all the extra bedding, I do have space in most of our rooms but where does it get placed? You guessed it, on the floor or in the unoccupied chairs. Why don't they use the unused chest drawers or the empty armoire or closet? They don't even use these for their stuff!

It's easier (though not profitable) to be able to sleep in rooms when your occupancy is zero or low

but .. oh well ... you make the most of your situation.

Trust me you would learn alot if you do it with guest there.

My biz traveler uses 2 pillows. He removes the other 2 and the shams and puts them in the closet. Every time. For rooms with shams I usually find them used as I meant- as a back rest for the brass beds. But they are sometimes stacked on the floor or leaning up against the wall as if someone used them to sit on on the floor.
I had to get rid of the duvets that the PO's used to keep on the beds all summer. They WERE on the floor, walked on, trampled and dirty.
Each room has either a closet or a valet with a large shelf. That's where I put the extra pillows when I'm cleaning.
