Normally I am very chipper but this week has been harsh, I am now on day 7 of interupted sleep as DH and I both have really bad colds, I have lost just about all voice and have been up all night coughing, he's not much better. Thursday night was 2 very odd couples who I was up worrying about and coughing who actually turned out fine - then friday night was coughing and 16 golfers who I had agreed could play poker in the lounge if they kept the noise down and wern't too late which saw me telling them to keep it down at 12pm. On top of this at 10pm on Friday night one of the pumps for the basement packed up which meant I was left with a full house on Flower show weekend (20 thousand people expected) with a room11 which was going to pour all the water out of its shower and sink into my bathroom. To add to this it meant we could not use the dishwasher so had to do everything on saturday morning and sunday morning by hand. Chaps have come out today and sorted it but it took 8 bags of towels to soak up the water and we are still drying out the carpet. Also had a right Hoo Haa with some guests who were staying tuesday and wednesday with the shelbourn up the street and had booked friday and saturday with us Sue at the shelbourne had asked them what time they were comming to us and emailed me however I wasn't expecting them till the next day. Had rooms so wasn't a panic on but what they were doing was going home for the night then comming back with more flowers for the show unbeknownst to us. So lead to complete panic over nothing and a really stressful day. In the face of all this you can forgive me for being off my game! however all the guests have had a nice time and im full of meds so feel a bit better! (either that ok being a bit high may be a side effect!)

I know what you meant but I am picturing your place with guests hanging out the windows as you try to pack all 20,000 of them in the door!

You laugh but we had that one time it was hilarious! there was a cross over between a big bridal conference ie fills town and the Liberal Democrat national party conference. The bridal people come every year so booked well ahead and were all set. The liberals hadn't been before and a lot just turned up! people were putting them up on sofas, putting their kids on blow up beds and putting guests in their rooms, breakfast room floors the whole bit!

It was like a sort of posh hotel based refugee camp! fortunately a lot of the liberals were students and would share rooms even though they hadn't even met before which helped. I was working in a large hotel and we were ringing people in rooms for the same conference and asking them if another one could sleep on the floor! Its the main reason why i just wont risk turning up somewhere and hoping to get a room, because if there is a huge event you dont know about you won't get a room anywhere.

Cambs I don't want to make you grumpy, but can you please cut your paragraphs into readable bites...I can't read this, I can't, really seriousely, for real, it is beyond my visual capability to read a long paragraph.

I thank you, I want to read what you say...

PS GET BETTER SOON!

Trouble is cos I can't speak its all flooding out with my typing!

Ive been to the docs so hopefully will have it cracked soon either that or im going to loose the plot entirely! Have to do bowls of water with steam and stuff and breath it in a lot which is a bit inconvenient but frankly if the doc had said dancing naked in the woods would cure me at this point I would be doing that!

I never stop talking pretty much so this is like being completely handicaped!

Fortunately, when I am grumpy DH can smooth the way so the guests never know.  Got a bit grumpy this weekend when guest showed up a full hour before check-in and caught me vacuuming in my grubby clothes.  I answered the door and turned them over to Mr. Sunshine while I quickly got the welcome refreshments together.

So, I am a bit concerned that I got miffed so early in the season....usually I'm mellow until about mid-July.  Hmmmm, could be quite the year!

I think the early season grumpiness comes about for me because I extrapolate that the WHOLE season is going to be people who can't read and think they can show up whenever, blah, blah, blah.

We have seen for the last 5 rooms showing up from 1 -3pm. I just started putting up the sign that we'll be back at 4pm. I'm not like the others who welcome early check ins. Even when the rooms are ready, I value MY time which I don't have if guests are in the inn.

I want to shop, get a bite to eat, play with the dogs in the vineyard, whatever!!!

Oh, from time to time. Usually I'm frazzled by the end of the summer. Or when that certain special guest just manages to hit all my buttons (which is usually caused by them being discourteous to others.) Or my nosy neighbour who has harrassed my guests or my workmen.

Sometimes I just have to have MOH step in and let me take a nice afternoon nap.

Generally toward the end of the summer I have problems keeping the happy face pasted on all of the time.

Thankfully, I am not tested in the way you are. I do not have as many rooms nor the occupancy nor the kind of people you get. To have your occupancy would probably make a saint grumpy.

It is like DH described a VERY heated "discussion" he & wife #1 were having driving to a party with friends. As the car doors opened, all was smiles and congeniality.

I may be ready to start digging his hole, but the moment a car pulls up, all is wonderful, smiles and greeting. If i do not get home from Chapel until 1 AM or after and have an early breakfast, I may be dragging atound the kitchen but NOT in the dining room. I keep my grumpiness behind the OQ door - at least I hope I do.

We may come here and rant & vent but I would say the innmates here follow that mantra, Guests never know - unless they are Kreskin.

I was last night when we got a call at 11:30 p.m. asking us about our rates.    O.K.,  someone went to the trouble to find us online,  find a phone number, but was too damn lazy to find our website that gives that information.   That makes me grumpy.

Edited to add:  Never in front of guests.   There have been a few guests that saw blood dripping from my mouth (not literally) as I bit through my tongue, smiling all the while.

Three nights ago we had just gotten to the comfortable stage before dropping off to sleep and the phone rang at 12:30 AM asking if we had vacancy. I was proud of DH - he just said, "I am sorry but we are closed for the night." THEN he hung up and groused that he had to find "comfortable" again.

I am very careful about this. I am never never am grumpy except on the phone at 12 AM or after someone has called 6 time asking the same question but it is my job not to be grumpy. I have been to a few inns where the husband is grumpy. It is uncomfortabe to say the least. I try to be super nice even if I don't feel like it. This is my job. Any other job I have ever had the same. No one wants to deal with a grump. Smiling

We all have guests who tell us of grumpy innkeepers, like you said maybe the husband was grumpy the wife was sweet. Sometimes I think "grumpier old men" get a kick out of it, thinking they are being clever or something. But it doesn't come across like that!

BACKGROUND FOR THIS POLL:

I was appreciating the visit from the innmates here last night, and how much they complement each other. They are very enjoyable to be around. It made my whole week!

Someone said to me it is nice to have a visit from innkeepers who aren't grumpy. It made me think about this...as so many innkeepers ARE grumpy, so I agree with this statement. I like to associate with the non-grumps.  I like to be encouraged and inspired.

Are you a grumpy innkeeper? Are you self deceived into thinking you are happy and go lucky when in reality you are a grouch? Do your guests arrive to be greeted by a grouch?

This is a self help forum post. A self evaluatory one. Has innkeeping got you down? What can you do to be lifted up? It really does affect everything you do. Can you still find joy in this business?
