My guests from last night were supposed to be staying at an inn in VA tonight. They had a Gro up on for a restaurant in Richmond they were going to use Tuesday (by reservation only) but the inn cancelled them on Thursday, saying a new reservation system had caused a double booking - and they were cancelled. I have no idea why that would have made such a drastic change, but the only reservation they could now get for their "deal" was today at Noon.

I made chocolare chip muffins, fruit banana splits (red raspberries, honey dew, and strawberries (all fresh) with a squirt of whipped cream and a stemmed cherry, my egg bake with regular and garlic chives, English muffin bread - hot from the overn, crisp bacon, and fried sweet potato slices. They did not touch the juices, barely touched the fruit, had about 1/2 of one loaf of bread between them (each one had a loaf), and if between them they had 2 eggs worth of egg bake, I would be surprised.
It was not worth getting up at 4:30 AM!!! They have a 5.5 hour drive to that restaurant before they go to the Colonial Tourism Capitol & VA Beach. I hope the brunch and their "deal" were worth the effort.

Unless they are used to eating at 6 AM, no wonder they picked. I can't even think about eating until 10. Another reason we refuse to get up early to serve guests.
The past 2 mornings have seen guests with deadlines leave here at 6:30 AM. They were quite happy with cereal and coffee, all made by themselves.
At best, if they let me know far enough in advance, I can make muffins for them to take along.

K, sorry your efforts were not enjoyed, everything sounded wonderful and the fruit looks devine. I have to agree with Maddie, it was a lot to eat at so early in the am. And given they will be just sitting for 5+ hrs then eating again, all the food will just sit in their stomachs.
I am sure that the part they ate was enjoyed, and they will speak of it again, wishing they had been able to enjoy it to the max. It is disapointing when you put your heart and soul into something and it just is picked over.

Sorry your work went un appreciated. I would have given them a muffin, fruit, juice and coffee..TO GO. And be done with it. Breakfast at 6 am is not a good thing.

I personally can eat anything at any time - and i have the figure to prove it. It was just a sigh. I eventually went back to bed for a couple hours and was cheered to find a 4-night rez on ResKey. The guests liked everything. I just like to show what we do here - you never know what it is that will bing them back.

K, you are too good. Getting up at 4:30 is way beyond the call of duty.
DH will get up to make coffee and put fruit and muffin out (and hard-boiled eggs if requested) but I refuse to knock myself out at that hour. This morning I was busy in the kitchen at 7:45 am cooking for our 8:30 breakfast when one set of guests sat down and requested an early breakfast.
wow.gif

Sorry...all they got was fruit/yogurt, hot rolls and toast with jam. Nothing else was ready. They seemed perfectly satisfied and did mention that they "probably should have said something yesterday about catching an early ferry". Ahhhh yeaaaah! That would have helped!

Having been the "horse people" for many years, I would have killed for a hot breakfast at 0 dark thirty. As it was it was usually a quick stop at a donut shop to see if anything was ready or we waited until the fairground chuck wagon was open, then we got greasy breakfast sadwiches....oh so appetizing on 4 hours of sleep.
I appauld you for the effort and I am sure it was honestly appreciated even if they didn't eat much of it.
My kids hardly eat before leaving for an early class or work, but on days when one doesn't roll out of here until 9ish they are looking for the Russian Tea Room. With the horses I learned if there was hot food eat it, you never know when you can get hot food that didn't come from a drive through again. Most decent restaurants were closed by the time we were done, do we spent a lot of time at Denny's and Sambo's. It was really special when we found an IHOP open all night, then we were really livin large!!! ;-)

We all have something we do that others do not, this is your niche. I sure hope you tell them that this is the special treatment you get at Gillum House, but don't expect this when you get to Copperhead's or she will coil up and sissssssssss! lol

I often do my egg bake breakfast to go for my horse people who do not want to waste time sitting down to eat. I wrap everything in wax paper (as sandwiches on either English muffin bread or cornbread) so it can be nuked at a gas stop or eat as they drive. Only the juice is drink it here or get some on the road. To-go coffee cups (large) for coffee or tea.

We had them in the East (or Midwest?) also. I remember them but cannot remember which area since I grew up knowing both. Did not go West unil 1963.
Were they the pre-cursor to Elby's (Big Boy) or Denny's? Same kind of place.

Yes I was. Born and bread Californian, been on the east coast about 23 years now. Family is still all out west.
I could watch the breakers at Dana Point Beach from my English Class in HS if I sat in the right seat.
Oh yes, I figured you would know Sambo's.

Spent way too many late nights at the Winner's Circle across from the fairgrounds at Del Mar. That was our alternative to Denny's.
Horses were at La Costa. Found memories of galloping one of my mares around that track at Del Mar for what seemed like hours.

Oh yeah...
Some of my old stomping grounds as well.

K I thought of you. I went to the credit union and lo and behold on my recpt there was a slogan near their logo, and it read:
Modern Convenience, Old-Fashioned Service
I am really loving branding and slogans, catch phrases. I had one I use trying to entice motorcycle riders who stay with us "Flip-Flop Approved" Dh thought it silly, and well yes it is, supposed to be, I wanted them to know we are casual, kick off the riding boots and sit on the porch with a beer.
I have so many catch phrases it is hard to nail them down.
But when I saw that I thought of this thread, and about you. You could change it to "Modern Comforts, Old-Fashioned Service" I know you have your own slogans, etc but this just jumped out at me.

Sorry that this happened to you...it's always disappointing to put in that much work and see guests not partake!

Lovely fruit course there.
But it was probably because they had to be on their way early.
