Oh Dear ..... crescent rolls, apples, lemon lime soda .... This shouldn't have been this good ...

Just tried a new recipe that had entirely rave reviews on line but sounded too good (read simple) to be true.

Country Apple Dumplings:

Apples, rolled in crescent rolls, topped with butter / sugar / cinnamon and soda then baked.

My "go to" list of sweet entrees is much much smaller than my list of savory but I think I just found a new one - although horrified by the ingredients the end result was plates scraped clean ..... I sooooo didn't want to like this but ....

Would you serve 1 or 2 pieces per person?

I served two pieces (each one cut in half to make four on the plate) ... plus I put two pieces of apple in each triangle (and stretched them out first) .... and then for color and acidity added raspberries when I plated and a good dollop of vanilla / honey greek yoghurt.

Was this breakfast, or a fruit course?

My first thought was fruit starter, but I prefer to serve something a lot less sweet as a starter.  It worked surprisingly well as a main course.

What else did you serve with it?

I was thinking of leaving out the soda as that's probably why it takes so long to bake. Just do the cheese & apple crescent rolls. For a starter. Just thinking about trying to get something out of the oven on time that takes 40-50 minutes is just getting up too early!

But it's the soda that makes them so "dumplingish".  I always leave at least two hours prep / cook time in the morning so I loved the fact I could get them prepped and then leave them in the oven to do their thing,

Anybody ever tried substiuting apple cider for the soda?  Just the thought of Mountain Dew makes my teeth hurt!

I think you would be able to prep the apples in the dough the night before, then overnight in the fridge. Pour the other stuff on top in the morning and bake.

I don't think of this as a main course...but it sounds like a perfect fruit starter!

I like some of the suggestions from the reviewers...I would add a bleu cheese or cheddar cheese. Still having a tough time with the can of soda!

The original recipe called for Mountain Dew .... I just used what I had Smiling

My main(e) issue was that I really do try to stick with local, fresh stuff ..... but this will be so easy for a housefull.  As I said, I was almost hoping this wouldn't work ......
