Lactose free sub for buttermilk?

Arriving guests have just laid on the LF + GF info. Can I use soy milk or almond milk in place of buttermilk?

Buttermilk is essentially an acidic milk, you have two choices, use a non-dairy sub, like almond or rice along with a tablespoon of lemon or vinegar per cup (well, really one cup less a tablespoon). 

The other side is if you don't need the acid taste, you can simply skip the acid and use a non-dairy sub, but if your recipe has baking soda, you need to replace it with baking powder, 1 tsp per 3/4 tsp of baking soda. Or, if you have it around, 1/4 tsp cream of tartar will do the same thing.

You can make your own lactose free "buttermilk" by adding lemon juice 2-3 teaspoons to your soy or other LF milk.  You can use Apple Cider Vinegar or cream of tartar in the same amounts if you don't have lemon handy.
