Value Added B&Bs – Part 1

First of all, look at what you already offer. Many of us err on the side of modesty, and it can be easy to take for granted just how good your property is. In the internet age, your website is your most important advertising billboard (especially when software from companies like freetobook offers you the chance to provide online booking at no extra cost). So ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does your website really emphasise all the aspects that make your property special? These could include its location, its special features (e.g. open fire, sun terrace, any period details) and its proximity to interesting tourist sites (or just to some pleasant local walks.)
  • Are you mentioning all the great things that you already do? Do you serve breakfast using locally sourced ingredients? Do you even grow some of your own food? People are more and more sensitive to issues of sustainability these days. If they see that you’re doing your bit for the environment and helping the local economy, they may be willing to pay that little bit extra.
  • Do you offer free WIFI (as opposed to most chain hotels, who charge for it)? If so, let prospective guests know.

Nice comments from some inn-mates on there too!

A comment that got my attention though was "I get asked about televisions but in 11 years I don’t think more than a handful of people have taken the time to watch it.”

Hmmm....if I had to watch it in the common living room, I probably wouldn't do it either. I really don't consider that as a 'value added'.

I saw that, that linkedin B&B forum has some odd thinking over there... I am a person who would never watch a communal tv, ever. If it were up to me I would switch the dang thing off! That includes restaurants, unless Footie is on. But I have my series I love to watch on tv or netflix.  I can't wait for the new DALLAS to be on soon, with JR Eweing "Hello Darlin'!"

Also would never watch a communial TV but at least in the UK it is standard to have TV's in guest bedrooms you would really struggle to sell rooms without. The only places that dont are ones that specifically market to the there is no TV crowd and thats a very limited market.

Most guest come in a  say WOW  this is so much nicer then I thought it would be. Then I tell them I designed and decorated the place not to mention helped build it.  ( yea I'm super woman)!!!  Is working on the WOW factor for the cottage rooms, then will have photos redone.  But your right I need to tell the world!

Many of us err on the side of modesty

I know that is a big weakness here.  Our son says that all the time... you need to BRAG more... 

Just had a thought, I hear guests say nice things all the time and I smile and say thank you...but that is it.  Well now I am going to start writing these things down... let them give me inspiration as to what to brag about.  Things we just do or have that we don't think is anything special.

 Just be honest and don't oversell.   If you've got it,  flaunt it, but without exaggeration.  Don't let your advertising write a check that your B&B can't cash.

'Tis a fine line, though, as we don't want to set guests expectations so high that there is a possibility they will be disappointed....

Copperhead, write the nice things that guests say on Post It notes and put them on your computer screen or in your office to remind you of what a great job you do and how nice your place is.  It would be a good pick-me-up!

I have an innkeeper friend who uses these quotes as Guest Quote of The Day (GQOTD) for her Facebook entry each day for the inn. Very clever!
