for my niece to be married today ... Of course tempered by my budget ... But what would be an average amount would you think?  No one knows my financial situation ... Let's pretend I'm average.

thanks for any insight

Don't know what you decided to do, but having just gone through our son's wedding, I think that $100 (or equivalent on a registry) is a generous gift for someone who is not a siblling or child.  $50 would be very much appreciated.   You should do whatever is comfortable for you within your means...your niece will be grateful for whatever you give them.

My brother just got married last weekend. I told them that because we are so close, I would wait until after the wedding and let them open what they got. Then, if they didn't get something they REALLY wanted or discovered they needed, to let us know and we'd get it for them (within reason).

At the wedding, the bride (whom I love dearly) says to me, I could really use a metal shelving unit to store all these things we are getting. Done. $55.00. And it's something they NEED.

They are not a frivolous couple and don't really want what they don't really need.

I think $100 is a pretty standard if it's a cash gift.

We're still marrying off DH's siblings! And now the nieces & nephews are getting married! My MIL has 18 grandkids ranging from 37 yo to 18 months. And 3 great grandkids ranging from 4 yo to 4 days (and one on the way). It's those 18 grandkids (17 nieces and nephews, thus far, that made us opt for the $50 or a gift of lesser amount). Odd how we might not even be around when the 18 month old is old enough to get married.

All through grade school two of my classmates were aunt & niece. One of my cousins was the same age as her uncle and she had her first baby at the same time as her youngest brother was born. When I was 16 I tpld my Mother - Thank you. She asked for what? I replied for quitting when you did. I did not want my kids growing up with my siblings.

Everybody's circumstance is different and there definitely is no shame of $50 cash gift. For weddings I really prefer to find a beautiful picture frame or other item on sale (something one doesn't usually buy for themselves) and give it as a gift rather than cash. You know what I mean...something that looks really expensive, but you didn't pay full price for it. Call me a tightwad!  LOL

Even my accountant has declared that I "run a tight ship".  LOL  I figure the more I save, the more vacations I can take!

We're going to Ireland in late Sept/Oct for a couple weeks. Can't wait! Thinking about my vacation is what gets me through the tough summer season.

I have oodles of cousins who had oodles of kids. We were close so I was invited to most of the showers and weddings. When we would come home to WV for a vacation, I would go to the outlet store at the glass factory and load up on goblets. 6 wines, 6 waters, 6 flutes - and I would pay 50 cents per and each one got a nice gift of West Virginia goblets.

For a wedding later this month I am giving $100 and a little token gift (well, it's a chia pet but that's an inside family joke - otherwise I would do something small like a picture frame).  It's for my stepmother's niece but I am close to the family, especially this daughter, and her husband-to-be just got laid off from his job.

Because we have a million nieces and nephews we looked ahead and thought, 'Hmmm, so many siblings, they might talk to each other...' so we picked $50 as a cash gift amount. (I will add to that for my side of the family because there are only 2 siblings and they don't know the other side of the family! I would give them $100. But, I'm also a lot closer to them.)

I would do $100 - IF I could afford it. Actually that is what I gave my niece in April. Non-relative somewhere between $50 and 75.
