Also, if they are returning for another night, I send them off with a Gazetteer after showing them how to use it. Many have used it and enjoyed the day even more. If they are just going on, I give them a WV map with routing line drawn on the map. I also keep PA maps to give if they are headed in that direction (I get them at their Welcome Center)

Reminds me of my full length hiking list in every room and guests still approach to ask me where they should go hiking.  I ask if they saw the complete list on their bed when they checked in, "Yes, but we wanted to ask you" okay I say, I painstakingly put that entire list together with the exact location of each hike, and distance from here and put a copy on your bed for you.  So THOSE are my recommended hikes.

In some instances it's okay to _itch-slap your guests.   I haven't yet,  but I sure get the urge from time to time.

There are several free maps of the area available so we use those and mark them up individually based on our guests preferences.  I have found that going over the map with the guests works well.

Online, we have a printable map of the area, also an 'interactive map' where they can turn on and off places of interest, restaurants, etc.  Then once they are here I have turn by turn directions of our scenic area. I also have printed places of interest if they do a day trip north of us or a day trip south of us.

Guests love these turn by turn directions we supply them once they are here. They don't need to think at all! Vacation brain!

I have a turn by turn routing to places and I bold FYI for places that may be of interest and tell about places to eat (if we have been there).

Our tourist offic is great .It provides us with  all the information whether that be maps local fishing holes, local attractions  near and far . Local markets, all attractions in the surrounding area . Plus the B&Bs Hotels and motels . Most of the local things are on the maps they give out.

We are quite lucky as our local tourist info (which is up the street) and the chamber of commerce produce maps with lots of local landmarks on it which they give away free so we have them ready and avaliable for guests when they need them.

I think that is a great idea. It could save time if they look and print out before they come.

We have made a few maps using Google Maps of the surrounding areas that guests can use, but also made them public. Every map starts at our location and then I have added into them points of interest, walking tours, restaurants, pharmacies and the such. We haven't posted them on the website, but we do give the guests URLs in email so they can use them.

Good one! I made a couple of maps but when they print out the numbers don't print with the text list so I have to number them by hand if I print them out for guests.

I may try another one...

That's what we've done.   In Texas,  distances are measured in "minutes" rather than miles because everything is so spread out.

We have a local map provided by the local tourist bureau,  but I print out customized Google Maps show how to get to specific destinations from our place that includes a map and step-by-step instructions.   I also added the GPS coordinates for those who'd rather go that route.

I'm thinking about adding QR codes to the maps, so they can just scan the coordinates into their phones.

Do you know that you can use icons from elsewhere to personalize? http://code.google.com/p/google-maps-icons/ or  http://mapicons.nicolasmollet.com/category/markers/ for example.

I know that the new project has a lot more, but you can still use the old one too. I love the numbers, because you can give guests a tour that they need to follow and the number markers and descriptions for them.

I was about to tell you to use these numbers. When you edit and set them up as the icon, they do print.

Cool! Thanks for sharing. I was just trying to come up with some icons for a project. This is a neat site.
