I'm wanting to have a splash screen that shows up whenever guests logon to our WiFi network.  I need to be able to basically reroute the guest to a subdirectory of my website where they would land on a welcome screen and then be able to get information on places to eat and things to do.

Anyone know how I would accomplish this? I would imagine it requires running a Linux based system software on my Linksys Router other than what comes native on the router.   I'm a little nervous about attempting this on my own because I'm sure I'd never be able to restore the original settings.

A couple of my hotel clients have this. Their network people set it up. I did a basic log in page and they did the rest. So I don't know what it involves.

i like the idea and wanted to do it for the guest computer back when ...

when i'm using a hotel's free wifi (rare) or starbucks (often) ... i don't mind seeing their page.  sometimes they will show specials coming up or things to do of interest.  and right there is that 'sign up for our newsletter' or 'sign up to hear about our coming events and specials' buttons.  i tend to sign up.

just don't make it too difficult to advance from and i think it will be well received

From a quick google I found these, you probably already did to:

It's called a captive portal

The captive portal technique forces an HTTP client on a network to see a special web page (usually for authentication purposes) before using the Internet ...

google: hotspot software

PT thanks for asking this question, we should do this as well. Great idea.

Sigh - another thing to make me wish I was more tech savvy - but not enough to spend the time delving into it. We have a Performance Center to erect (band shell at the Park) and Community Center to finance.

Have thought about doing that here but then realized I hate that when I try to log onto my computer at an airport or a hotel and I have to go thru that screen each time.

Still...if you find out how to do it...I'd love to pop up the local things to do calendar.
