I figured the "Why people don't stay in B&B's" should have a counter here. I am sure we can list many of the reasons our guests enjoy B&B's over hotels...
Feel free to share...

Yes, an actual towel that barely covered one cheek at a nice hotel. It was so small and thin it was no use on my head as a hair wrap!
B&B's care about this sorta stuff...we just do!

Why most of my guests say they stay at a B&B whenever they can-
  • they like the homey feel
  • the attention they get paid by the owners
  • the morning chats
  • seeing into the houses in the towns where they travel
  • the history
Oddly, they rarely mention the beds or the breakfast as the reason.

A hotel will not give you:
quiet hallways
great conversations (without feeling you are being picked-up)
safe parking area
great coffee
wonderful and filling breakfasts (with care packages for the road or the rest of your loaf of bread)
FREE bottles of water in the fridge
FREE WiFi
FREE movies

Some come for the doilies.
Seriously. That is, the overall Victorian atmosphere that goes with a house from that period. A facade of concrete, aluminum and plate glass isn't everybody's cup of tea. Lots of people like to stay at a place that's more human!

in the UK - (1)it is seen as a cheap option to hotels
(2) - our problem is shaking off old myths - ie you have to share a bathroom, you have to be in by 10 and so on, which is why places are a bit coy about saying they are a bb, guest house or guest accommodation
(3) this is why we are lucky here as demand often pushes people who would not normally stay in a B&B into one - its like a training program! means we get them through the door and they don't go back!

I had someone go thru my house the other day telling me all this woodwork was added to make it look Vic. No, it was put in when the house was built. This other molding, the plain jane stuff was what was added after the fact.

Isn't it interesting to hear people tell you how much more they know about your house than you do? OK, I only live here....

People in this neck of the woods stay at B+B's because:
it's romantic yet homey (in the best sense of the word), luxurious (fluffy towels, nice crisp linens, lovely antiques). Value for value it is a better "deal" than staying in the local hotel...even if it doesn't have a pool and a Coke machine! The innkeepers help to guide their guests to the best places and have a wealth of information about the area, allowing the guests to make the most of their visit.
Bottom line....people feel like they are treating themselves to something special when they stay at a nice B+B. It's all about their perception (which we all try hard to create
