My Vets arrived this evening. One couple wanted to take us out to dinner tonight, but DH had a procedure this afternoon and we had just eaten. It was sweet of them. BUT that is not what prompted me to post.
Unfortunately, the timing sucked with one room needing to get keys, but a guest from October called tonight because he wanted to send me something for the Vets. I told him he already had given John something for the Vets before he left. We chatted for a while, but not as freely as I would have liked. So I sent him an email tonight telling him each Veteran will find a Gillum House envelope with a note card with a $20 in it stating Thank you for your Service from a Gillum House Guest. I wanted him to know what I had done with his generous gift. That call was so thoughtful.

We said goodbye to four families of vets and one active military family today who took advantage of our two-night offer. Saturday night, the bar band I used to play with serenaded the house with blues, early rock-n-roll, and bunches of tear-jerking ballads during happy hour and our simple supper. Sunday morning, we performed an a-cappella version of the Star Spangled Banner (both verses). Lots of misty eyes in the dining room.

It was an excellent weekend. Thanks, Kathleen, for coming up with idea and all the work you did early on to make sure it would happen. We had twenty-four people in our lodge this weekend, and although none of them know your name, they all owe you an awesome debt of gratitude for your idea.
And so do we.

Thank you, Tom, it gives me the warm & fuzzies every year to know that Vets and their partners are being thanked for doing as my Vets did - moving 12 times in 20 years and some more often. Thanking the partners for holding down the fort while the military half went TDY which could last 1 week or way, way longer or was deployed. The Navy could be at sea for 6 months or longer. Thank you for helping our industry give them a get-away that is much needed.

As with healthcare professionals, vets face ethical decisions about the care of their patients. Current debates within the profession include the ethics of purely cosmetic procedures on animals, such as declawing of cats, docking of tails, cropping of ears and debarking on dogs. -Tax Tiger
