You can't get much more rural than Canaan. That IS a tiny hamlet.

The first article says he broke in to the B & B. No matter what kind of lock you have, someone can break in.

No.

A lock is called a deterrent. An open door is an invitation. This was not a robber breaking in, but a guy who was drunk, who probably couldn't even put a key in a lock if he had one.

Our largest B&B here kept their main house front door totally unlocked most of the time (just like a hotel) and a similar thing happened.  A homeless guy wandered in one day and was found sleeping in one of their ground floor rooms!!

Even though they have many fewer rooms and much, much less business, to my knowledge, they still have an open door policy since I see folks walking right in....

We have a Schlage keypad lock on both our houses.

Amen! But it could just as easily have been a guest elated to be away from the regular grind for a few days.

It could be, but most of us will assure you that those type guests are rare at B&B's. (Not the elated part, you know what I mean! haha)
