Many of our guests tell us they have thought about opening an inn, and have questions about running a B&B.
Here is a brand new super innformative book on the subject, for those aspiring or dreaming, and for those "perspiring" like me. :)
Great information on social media marketing..."Maximum Occupancy - the book!" Read more here with order info. You may have seen Linda at the PAII conference in Vegas.

We have shared this here recently, what does your inn have that is unique? That is the X factor. Location? Amenities? Innkeepers? Blog? What is it that makes it what it is. If there is not something, no X factor, then that is something to work toward, that is all part of our marketing. [/h4]
Let me know if anyone gets this book, so we can discuss here. There were some basic simple "duh" moments for me in the book. Example: If you want to list Bars/Pubs/Clubs and Taxi Service in your area, don't get mad when you have guests come back drunk as dogs at 2:00 a.m. and then sleep through breakfast.
By putting THIS info out there, you may not be attracting the guests you want. Meanwhile the guests you do want, read this and think, hm people will be coming back drunk as dogs from clubbing at all hours, I will look at the next inn.
So think about what you put on your website and what you leave off. There very well may be plenty of clubs/pubs in your area, but your folks are there to go birding and hiking. Leave it off.
This is how you attract the guests you really want. AND better that you won't end up with bad reviews from expectations not being met.
We really need to not be a catch-all B&B. We actually lose money trying to be one, we waste marketing time, energy and $$.

Ha! Just last night someone called about a room for the weekend and asked if we had a bar on site... As much as I wanted the business, I was thankful for being able to say no. I didn't even offer that he could BYOB because the way he addressed it I am sure he would have brought the bar here. I mentioned the casino hotel in a neighboring town - I am sure he will be happier there..!
It took me too long to realize that you just can't be all things to all people, so to speak.

That is what I call "shotgun" marketing - the Directory listings.

Carnival Cruise Lines just reserved 1500 rooms in NOLA for the people who are disembarking in Mobile after the cruise to hell. Gotta wonder what they paid for that.

hmmmm...I don't consider the directories and shot gun. They are targeted to people specifically look for b&bs. Then once they get to your listing it's more refined. Expedia, etc is marketing to everyone and is shotgun.

Engine fire caused loss of power which caused loss of flushing which caused sewage everywhere.
Also no a/c, ship listing at times, can't prepare or refrigerate food. Tugs towing the ship about as fast as I could push it.

YIKES!

I've ordered the book.
Drunks at 2 a.m. is one problem we don't have here: we have no bars and no taxi service!
Two problems we have here: no bars and no taxi service!

I hate 3AM phone calls. We get them sometimes from people looking for an immediate room, but rarely. More often it's from people in France who mistake it for being evening here, instead of morning. +7 or -7 hours... which is it? Sorry, we didn't realize it was -7. (ie they called at 10AM their time and thought it was 5PM here, when it is really 3AM here.)

Oddly, the news today said the people disembarked in Mobile and then either boarded a bus for Houston or stayed in Mobile. So, at this point, not sure what happened once they got off the boat. But it sounds like some people had to sleep on deck and others hardly noticed any problems other than having to wait in line for food and not having A/C.

From what I am hearing on the radio, the lawyers are lining up to file the law suits for "damages". I heard this morning that one young woman told her Father that she thinks everyone on board is going to need psychological counseling. Hmmmm.

Always happens, until they read the contract of carriage that they all signed. Have to prove malice and actually physical damages. And it has to be done in Florida. They almost always lose against the cruise lines, especially since the ships are foreign flag-of-convience vessels.

I heard one of the buses broke down on the way to New Orleans.

Yes I was assuming the cruise lines, like the CC companies, have everything wrapped up well in the fine print where they can't be sued for all the drawbacks of a breakdown. It's not like this is the first ship this has happened to. I'm sure they have had all the legal language in place for a long time. You don't set foot on board unless you've waived your legal rights on this stuff.
Of course, negligence can usually still be sued for. If they knew the electrical system had problems and sent the ship out anyway, they could have some trouble there.

think its a bit of a cheek to charge $3 for the shipping of an electronic book!
