This is the month of love, I am offering a special of BOGO the entire month. If a person cannot stay the second night, then they can't stay. So far we have had an outrageous month of fantastic guests. A great way to bring them in for the coldest worst month of the year, like tonight, we MAY get snow, or we MAY NOT. It is 51 degrees right now. So it's anyones game...tis is, afterall Virginia.
This dude emailed and called for this weekend, he cannot stay the second night. Okay, no big deal, but he wants the book online $10 discount. I have this code - uncoded - for the month of Feb on the online rez as they are getting, not just $10 off, but up to maximum room rate and tax off!
So...he calls and says he wants to know about the $10 off discount.
Here is the dilemma.
DH believes he should get the $10 off since he is not able to stay the second night. This is defeating my 2nd night rule, trying to get a full room rate from a stay (one night). I tell him, he is getting $165 off his room, he can choose or not choose to use it, he can stay late if he wants and not check out at 11am.
Your thoughts? Am I being hard nosed or sensible?
Two things happen here, DH walks in from being gone at work, and some times can provide clarity when I can't see the forest through the trees. Other times he is not here, walks in and doesn't get it.

I am with your DH.... That is if you normally do allow one night stays, and do allow the $10 discount if booked online for a one night stay - what makes this weekend different... You then have the opportunity to make $165 for the other weekend night if someone only wants 1 night.
If this had been requested several weeks ago I could see your hesitation in wanting a 2 night stay, but being within 1 week & the room is open - as you say 'Book it Dano'

I have similar discussions with DW, who does not like to have someone take advantage of something not intended. I sling the hash here mornings so I am close to the business and guests, but my perspective matches your DH: If a rate or discount - or whatever - is on the web and normally available, give it. A guest should not need to get inside our heads to know what he gets for what he has to pay.
If I were the gentleman in question, I would go "ouch" too bad I can't stay that second night, but at least I will be treated with the courtesy due a regular one-night stay, which includes (for you) the normal on-line discount.

Think of it like this. I see where you are coming from on this JB. They try to suck any money out of you they can. If they were another couple that would be using the second night for free. It would cost you a lot more than $10 to have them stay the second night for free. So for a $10 discount, they are only staying the one night and you might be able to rent the second night and double your money.
Good luck!

I'd go with giving the discount, too. If he then deciddecidedecides 2 nights sounds better, take back the discount and start over.

Nope, see there is no BOGO for the next couple. There are two nights on a weekend, if this couple only takes one, then the other does not have the 2nd night free. So the room is their's both night, no matter what.
This is FEB we are talking about, I don't have them lining up for rooms right now! I WISH! :)

The solution:
He didn't want to race out after work to get here on Friday night. It was only about convenience, nothing else. I spoke to him about self check in arriving late, and then waking up to breakfast here...I always mentioned the $165 he is saving. So he ended up getting the BOGO offer.
I don't really care if he stays the second night (it only costs us more), but THAT is where we are coming in being the nice guy, not the measly $10 off. So once I helped him understand the VALUE, he was all for it.
So in this situation, it all worked out. See he could not bookonline and get the discount, it is not available, literally. You can't combine offers, and the BOGO trumps all other offers.
He was happy, and was quite nice on the phone, so we are happy. :)

All's well that ends well!
