I've never stayed in a hotel that didn't have a stack of spare blankets in a bag in the closet. I've never used one, or known anybody who used one. If I'm colder than the regular bed accouterments will handle, I just turn up the heat in the room.
Are these extra blankets ever used? Are they just there in case the power fails and the heat goes off? Are they for couples where one wants a colder room and one wants warmer? In other words, do I need to buy some?

Our spare blanket(s) get used quite a bit. Some people can only sleep when it's cold in the room but need more warmth with blankets. Others don't want the sound of the heater at night, etc.
Sometimes I'll go into the room to freshen up and the room is like a sweat box and they've got the extra blanket on the bed. You're better off having an extra in the closet for those who need it.

In the winter we have a blanket, a duvet and a quilt on the bed. I don't have extra blankets in the room. Yes, once/year I get asked for one by someone who wants to sleep with the windows open.

Yes you need to buy some.
and btw people use blankets and put them back, and they use spare pillows and put them back, I have no idea why they do this.
On the same topic, I found a spare pillow in a bed pillow today, and without delaying this story further, in a sham was a memory foam. a really nice one, it was not ours, I wouldn't put a memory foam in a guest room.
So I took it out, and switched them all around. My daughter now has the memory foam.

We always have a spare, sometimes 2 in the room. Sometimes they are not used (well that is unless they are kind enough to fold them back as neatly as I had them) but sometimes ALL of them are used and piled high on the bed.
Yes, you need them.

We don't have them in our river cottages, but they're closed in the winter months.
Thanks for the advice. I'll get the blankets!

we have one spare in every room - never in 7 years have actually experienced anyone use them! we have them in the plastic zip up bags for cleanness

I use extra blankets - when? When the a/c is on! Not in the winter. Oddly enough.

We have spare blankets in every room. In the summer they sit on the shelves. In the winter they are often used. (It is normal around here to let the house temperature dip at night and then rebound in the morning.) In the winter I often place them at the foot of the bed, folded and tucked in a such a way that the guest can simply pull them up to cover themselves.
We also have had instances where people will remove the duvet and use the blanket alone instead. My aunt says she can't sleep with a duvet.

I am one of those people who likes blankets and less heat in the room.

Another thing we do is have a smaller throw blanket on the love seat/chair of the guest room. Folks like to snuggle up and take a nap or read with it on them.

Eewwww could you imagine that in a hotel??/ OMG. You would wonder where it had been and what it had been used for. Of course we know yours is cleaned. I had the same and washed it after each guest.

You're right, I would never use one in a hotel! One more example of "A Better Way to Stay"!
