DH is in bed reading. I was asleep and did not even hear him come in. Midnight he wakes me up (I have a guest upstairs so cannot ignore the knocking)..

It is a town cop with someone who needs a room. Story was a girlfriend got drunk and since he had a scratch on his face he had proof he was on the receiving end when the cops came. I asked the cop if this was a freebie or a pay. The kid (looked younger than my kids but my baby will be 40 this year) said if I took a debit card he could pay. He did not even ask how much. I charged him $50 + tax. Kid is working the pipeline -  not a welder so is not big bucks. I told him this morning what the normal rate wasin that room. I think he gulped hard. Gave him the boiled egg, coffee, juice, and banana brekkie I give my weekly guy.

Hope we do not have a repeat soon.

You were kind and you know it will be returned someday-you were probably a Godsend to the young man.

YOWZA!  You're a better person than me....I think my guests would have not enjoyed the police knocking on the door at midnight here.  Sad

don't get me started on the ruddy police - I am sure they are the same in the USA as here - not very subtle! next door to us has been condemned for fire stuff,  yet again and she mainly has lodger people in there, but they have been told they can't sleep there overnight till its sorted (but they keep sneeking back in) however there was one lot that wouldn't leave (she's been trying to get them out for non payment of rent so its actually quite handy) and they police had to turf them out. However while the police where there they saw into her son's room and discovered he had a can a bis farm in there - we all knew as you could smell it on the street! plus don't know how the police didn't notice before as they are there every saturday! so he's been arrested. so that was yesterday!

All the cheap hotels/motels are booked with pipeline. Even the big chains are doing a booming business with them (and I am hearing the stories of the cleaning/maintenance). They screened him before they came here - they knew he was not drunk or a problem. Very polite and soft-spoken. Our Police know to watch out for us - my City Manager would be furious if she lost her chauffeur/City Clerk/Board member/Commission member/photographer/tourist info center. They know us.

Nice they think of you BUT in the middle of the night, a guy that COULD have been a trouble maker  (as they say it takes 2 to tango) I would request they NOT remember me at those times.

For this I am thankful we are surrounded by cheap hotels with all night staff. And there really is nothing like the way a cop knocks on the door is there?

You are a good person.

Girlfriend is a pretty mean drunk. Hope she doesn't come around looking for him.
