Here they would have bulldozed that and built a strip mall years ago :-(
.
we are super lucky here - the above is now a world heritage site it preserved for the good of the world! we also have Jerveax abbey, Riveaux abbey as well - the monks built abbeys here to be as far away from London and the main church! though they were a bit foiled when they built a huge cathedral at york and ripon! (ie within 20 miles)

I have been there! It IS impressive. I

without wanting to sound like a Welcome to Yorkshire rep (our tourism advertising body) we are very lucky here - we have an excellent tourism product
3 national parks
Abbeys, stately homes and castles all over!
Stunning coastline as well as amazing cities, theatres, sporting venues,
For example this is what they are building 15 miles away - http://www.leeds.gov.uk/leisure/Pages/Leeds-Arena.aspx
at least 2 michellen star chef's in my town alone, national award winning restaurants, several with rosettes's (if you don't have them in USA its a quality standard for restaurants like star rating)
new xmas market, beer festival, international crime festival (writing not stealing) international arts festival, best turkish baths in europe (we just won it 2nd year running)
and hope to be working with the \Rotary to put together a soap box race for 2014 - to rival this which happens in the next town which is an amazing event and attracts tourists from all over the world - http://www.knaresborough.co.uk/bedrace/ and am half way through putting together our 3rd annual 1940's day in the park!
My current charity is Friends of Valley gardens - this is a large park in the center of town - and stunningly attractive - but very underutilised for events - has large cafe, large bandstand and seating area, and while I know we are in the UK and the weather is a bit iffy feel we could make much better use of it!

Our Performance Center (aka band shell) is supposed to be erected in the Park in time for our Independence Concert on July1. Last year we had to use an alternate date because of the derecheo.
