Hello, I'm new to the site and my fiance and I are beginning the process of investigating the B&B lifestyle / business. We signed up for a local community college course but it was cancelled when only 2 people signed up for it (my fiance and myself!). Can anyone recommend a website or convention that would be helpful? Reading the posts on here has been helpful as well but I realize a class would be more beneficial. Also, excuse my ignorance but I gather a CVB is a variantof a Visitor's Bureau - but what is the "C" stand for? It sounds as if Chambers of Commerce are more welcoming than the CVBs for most of you as well. I have other questions to ask but I'll wait as it's still a lot to process. :)

Welcome. Sorry to say you just missed the best conference at PAII in Vegas and the Mid Atlantic Innkeepers in Md this year. Check with your state Bed & Breakfast Association. They usually offer workshops and conventions.
I take it by Hokie you are in VA or from VA TECH. Innvirginia.com is the state B & B association web site. Contact them.
Start reading all you can. Take time now to read all the posts on this forum. If you have a question, no doubt it has already been answered here. Use the SEARCH or just pick a thread and start reading. Then ask some questions.
Oh and start saving your money. No one will give you anything. So if you don't have money to start with, don't even think about it.

Normal Hokie? That is funny. :) The Roanoke CVB can't help with B&B stuff, they really promote hotels. Unfortunately there is a fantastic Mid Atlantic Innkeepers Conference going on RIGHT NOW in Maryland. So you just missed it.
What sort of training were you looking for? How to buy a B&B, how to operate a B&B, general hospitality? I ask as there are different avenues to go to for this.
All the best.

Thank you Joey and Empty Nest. Yes, I'm just doing research for now. If we were to embark on this adventure it wouldn't be for a few years yet. My fiance and I are trying to look for local courses to research this endeavor. Neither of us has business backgrounds (I'm an Architect and she's an 8th grade teacher) so we know we need help. We live in Maryland presently, although I don't think we're interested in staying here. Maybe New England, Maybe South Carolina? Who knows ... we'll know the right place when we see it. If anyone has a link to a Maryland B&B association we'd appreciate it. Otherwise we'll do our own research. Thanks for the clarification of the "C" in CVB.

West Virginia is a great place to live and raise a family and do B& B. And we are not saturated with B& Bs. Many of our larger cities have NONE and as small as my city is, I would LOVE to see another B &B open - would help ALL the way. Near enough attractions, events, and universities to build more traffic. Two or more means there is something here. We have the something but only one B& B. We also have some old beauties in town that would be nice for a B&B.

West Virginia is not out of the question. We know we'd like to stay on the east coast to stay near family. And certainly real estate is cheaper in WV which would be ideal for a profit return. The concern I would have is what the draw would be. Ski resorts? WVU? (you have no idea how hard it was for a former Hokie to write that WVU is an attraction / destination - ha ha ha - I had to say it brother, I had too!) But I believe the right location could have the attractions and profit return. We will definitely keep our neighbor to the west in mind while researching! ;)
Thanks for the advice,
Hokie N' Koala

I just posted the ski resorts on your NE thread. I can fill a book on the other stuff to do in those areas the rest of the year. And with the new Boy Sc out area being developed near the Gorge - this State is about to bust loose!! History, wineries, railroads, trails, shops, restaurants, museums - I could go on all day and half way into the night!!!
