My first guest was less than stellar, which I've already told you guys about... My second guest has been amazing- she's a terrific, very sweet international student and she quickly reminded us as to why we wanted to offer our place as a homestay to begin with!! We want to keep her forever!
But during her second day with us, I hurt my back. Not even sure what exactly I did... I woke from a nap with excruciating back pain. Then two nights ago, it got so bad that I literally could not move at all and we had to call an ambulance to help get me down the stairs and to the hospital. The pain has been so bad that I haven't been able to do any of my cooking or cleaning, and my husband, as great as his intentions are, simply can't keep up with it the same way I can. :) She's been totally fine with it, and has told me to not even bother with the cooking and cleaning, but I feel like I'm really slacking off!
I have another reservation scheduled for this Sunday night, and I'm really hoping I'll be feeling better by then! I can't believe how things have worked out lately! Sheesh... :( Beginner's luck?

You really are getting everything out of the way at the beginning! Hope you feel better soon.
(BTW, my DH crashed his motorcycle right before college graduation weekend. He was in the hospital when guests started arriving. He was highly medicated, but home, when they checked out. I called every unemployed relative we had at the time to come and help.)

You poor thing! I certainly hope you feel better quickly. Don't take any chances in your recovery - if the doc says lay on your back all day YOU BETTER DO IT!

More inconvenience now will mean a quicker healing process. Good Luck!

Hang in there. Things will have a way of working out. Gives you a chance to decide what sort of emergency network you might be able to develop, and whether there is any cooking you can teach DH to do that is simple but "elegant".

Not that this helps you, but I took a nap on the couch and woke up to have to roll OFF the couch and crawl up the couch to get upright. There really is nothing that can be done for it (if it is what got me). Rest will make it better - I unfortunately had to "grin and bear it" and with aspirin, it did go away. REST if you can. You do not have 6 kids and an outside job required to support everyone - so do not try it. I really hope yours is different. Lower back is a Bitch!!

in harrogate we are like the B&B walking wounded! one neighbour boiler out, one neighbour had to be prescribed antibiotics by one of the doctors staying with her she was so chesty and wheezy! im lucky as have a good support network but backs are the worst!

Oh no! Rest up, your guest(s) will understand. Unfortunately it takes an illness/injury for us to realize that we need some sort of backup. It's been a rough start for you, but at least you got rid of the creepy guy!

Sorry to hear this! Sure hope you are better soon... speaking of pains, you sure have had them!
On the bright side you will have time to work on your growing list of changes you want/need to do in the future. And a list of 'in case of' here is the go to....
Take care! Oh, and glad your 2nd guest has been more to your ideal guest.

Thanks everyone. Went to the dr yesterday and got some strong pain meds that hopefully won't knock me out as bad as the ones I got at the ER so that way I can function a little better! I have had some time thankfully to work on some price, policy and photo updates, thankfully. I raised the rates $20 to begin with, figured I'd see how that affects the number of reservations and inquiries, and if all looks good, I'll do another increase in a couple months. That scared me less than a huge immediate increase!
And DH is going to be doing all the cleaning this weekend, plus getting a crash-course in cooking! ...starting to think maybe this injury wasn't such a bad thing afterall! ;)
