OK, my new site launched today. Yay!
Now for the punch list...
  • 301 redirects...I can't make them work. Any tips would be appreciated. (Ask questions, I don't know what I don't know.) Never mind, I figured it out. You have to redirect the exact URL (ie - yoursite.com/page.html and not just yoursite.com/page.) Will finish fixing them all tomorrow. Must stop typing now!
  • When should I resubmit my site to Google? After the redirects are fixed?
Thanks to everyone who took a look. I'm still finding things I missed over the past 3 months. Pages on the old site I completely forgot about. Missing photos. But, I'm pretty happy!

If your home page is scanned by Google already, they will quickly rescan you automatically when they see the content has changed. They usually check every few days or so.

Glad you figured it out. No need to resubmit anything. Your site / domain is still the same. They find you asap.

Found a bunch of non-working links last night noodling around with the site on my tablet. Add more to the punchlist. Have to serve brekkie first...

Thank you all for helping! I think I can step away from the computer now! And go outside and play in the sun!
HUGE thanks to Empty Nest without whom I would still be wondering where to start!

Well done Maddie, I know how intensive it is to build a new site, and to get all the images just right, hyperlinks, and info. YOU ROCK!

Great job, Maddie! I am a picture person, so do wish that there were more room photos. Or, am I missing something??

One photo per room. I wish the rooms were bigger so I could take multi-angle shots, but they are just too dang small. In almost every photo I am jammed up in the corner trying to get all of the room. So, really, there is nothing over on the other side behind where I am standing.
Absolutely no bathroom photos, no one would stay here. You know the closet in 'my' bathroom at your place? That's the size of my bathrooms. The whole bathroom. It's not awful when you're here, but it would be off-putting in a photo.
None of the rooms photo well and my best bet for photos would be to remove the room doors and take photos standing in the hallway. Why remove them? They are hung backwards. They open up into the room instead of against the wall!

I totally get that and understand about the baths. We had a teensy bathroom recently at a place where we stayed on the coast. (No photo of the bathroom on the website.) But, because of the tidal marsh view and quiet of the place, I would totally stay there again even if that was the only room available. My bigger beef was that there was only one chair in the room! ;-)
I think you can still "invite" people into the room with photos that convey what the room is about, even if it doesn't show the entire room. Like this VA B&B room photos.

I have a large monitor, I wonder how their home page looks on a small one?

Fills up the entire screen, but shows it all (I think).

Big pat on the back! Your site looks great and I love the fact that you let your personality show. People will know just what to expect when they meet you at the door!

CL, while we are on the subject of websites, was wondering if you could give shed some light on mobile sites.... What is the most important things to cover on them? I know they need to be more direct - but how much is too much/not enough? Could you provide a couple of links of ones you think have done it right?
Thanks bunches.

I am like this with my room 12 - its a large room but has a antique half tester king size bed- and you just can't get far enough away from it to take a good picture! my only thought is, because it is on the ground floor I might open all the windows and try and take it from outside.

Well...If it is a reponsive theme you are using...you have your entire website visible. Don't have to cut out a thing. Here's one I just finished that is a new Responsive theme. Actually the same theme as Madeleine's but the beta responsive one.
I don't know if these are "done right"...but are ones I just did using go mobi from my hosting company
Here is one mobile site If someone pulls up their Normal site, it is automatically sent to this one. This one just uses a google calendar for availability. Can't convince her otherwise :-(
This one is another go mobi one. They have the old Twenty eleven WP theme...still can be seen on mobile phones, but they insisted on a mobile site as well. Fine.

Have also found that it seems I have to redirect every page, not just the ones that aren't carried over to the new site. Ex- old site has a page that is rooms.htm. New site has a page that is rooms (without the .htm). That is NOT the same thing as far as URL's and searches go.
If I type in mysite.com/rooms.htm I do NOT go to mysite.com/rooms, I get a 'page not found' error. Meaning, if someone has bookmarked any of the old pages, other than the home page, they will get a 404 error.
Sigh. I thought the tough part was over. And I really have to get this done NOW as the site is being reindexed and I'm losing page rank with all these 'new' pages that are really old pages without the .html attached.
Plus, random redirects are not working.

Why not try this:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/redirection/ or this one: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/page-links-to/

I saw those in the help pages I found. If I can't make all of them work in the cPanel I will have to do this.
