But she came out smelling like a rose!
We just came back from 2 weeks away. Instead of hiring a professional innsitter as we usually do, we decided to give our 'assistant' the opportunity to step in while we were gone. Our hope has always been to find a local that could relieve us so we could get a break for a day or two in the busy season. "Rose" we found by contacting the local jr college hospitality program.
Well, she got some real PITAs while we were gone! One of them is certifiable...walked into our kitchen while she was cooking, going into our laundry area, then later, she was found on our back porch of our innkeeper house looking in. On check in she said she didn't think they were b&b people. Wanted a discount, wanted to leave early, complained that since they were the only guests the 1st night that they should get a discount....then stated the next day when there were other guests here that they didn't like that others were here! "Rose" thinks she was intoxicated most of the time.
This PITA whined about everything, then wrote nice things in the room diary. She then wrote a personal message to me on FB "just a quick note to say thank u for the nice weekend . My husband and i we weren,t for sure what to expect as it was our first time at a b&b , our good friends told us about your place .
We enjoyed getting to know "Rose" she welcomed us with a warm smile we liked our room . and the Breakfast was really nice . The secound morning we werent really that pleased with our morning meal the sasauge was really salty and greasey! & the eggs neither one of us really cared for them so we basicly didnt eat that meal!! I know "Rose" was really trying . Also i noticed as i was reading threw the face book page their was also a discount on the rooms. it was saying about spring special it was not mentioned to us when we first signed up. did that apply to us? sense we did stay there on those days. the special said till may 12th !!!! i was just wondering . Thank u R&R .
we look forward in the future to spending time their soon . i enjoyed the specail little touches that were made when we arrived the special card !!! and our names at the front door !!!"

I sent them them a reply back saying no, no, nooooooo (as professionally as I could).
PITA #2 was returned guests they stayed one time 3 years ago) who were disappointed that we were not here. They gave "Rose" attitude.
PITA #3 were also returned guests. When "Rose" went to freshen up, there were adult toys all over the place! It freaked "Rose" out, so she just left everything the way it was. On checkout, he left a note complaining that the room hadn't been freshened and that the cookie jar was empty. She (the wife) left wonderful comments in the room diary and said they would be back.
After experiencing the last 2 weeks, she's still excited about the work and we're excited to have someone we can call on. Whew!

I am glad she made it out the other side, and you as well. Bless her heart. "Innkeeping ain't for wimps!"

The TIPS says she did a great job and if she is still standing after those PITAS, she is a keeper. I am sooooo glad you have found someone.

They do try to take advantage of the substitute don't they???.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing. She also had a guy with a phone reservation who insisted on only giving her an AmEx for the deposit. When told we don't take them he hassled her, wanted to know when the owners were coming back, etc., etc., including insisting we hold the room without a deposit. I ended up having to call him, and amazing, he was super nice and understanding....all because I'm the owner. I told him if he didn't give "Rose" another credit card by a certain date and time, we could cancel his reservation.
He's here right now and all is good.

Totally not the same thing, but... I had to take my nephew to the ER. No one asked and I never said I was not his parent. No way I was going to have him cool his heels while they tracked down 'the parents'. Now, they may have let me slide as guardian as his parents were several states away but I wasn't playing games.
Whenever anyone said to him (and looked at me), 'Your mom will have to keep an eye on this for awhile,' he just nodded his head. Never said, 'That's not my mom,' because he didn't know they thought I was. He thought they meant his MOTHER. And, amazingly, he never called me 'Aunt' the whole time we were there.
Same thing in a way to people treating your asst that way because they knew she wasn't the 'mom'.
I wonder if it's better to just say, 'Yes, I'm the new innkeeper,' and let the guests treat her with respect. (Or not, as we've all seen!)

I have the reverse of this as DH is 28 and i am 31 we get asked where the owner is? and where is my mother? which i find very insulting

Don't you just want to slap some people up the side of the head sometimes??
I remember how happy I was to turn 30. It seemed to me that a shift change happens and people start taking you more seriously. It was probably more in my head than actuality, but I felt like it made a difference.
