Breakfast VALUE

We had the opportunity to go out this morning for a special breakfast.  It has been a long time - just sayin'!

But HOLY COW!   I really didn't think about value/cost etc. at all when we ordered.  But as we sat in this little cafe, coffee cup empty, then as the measly meal was set down in front of me something in my head said man this is just plain ain't right.  

2 (overly) cooked scrambled eggs, a scoop (size of scoop of ice cream) of grits, 2 small slices of tomato (roma size slices) & wheat toast, while DH had scrambled, bacon, 2 pancakes.....   Our bill with tip was over $24.    We had to ask for every stick of butter, every single cup of coffee and every creamer....  seriously! 

Man - our bed and BREAKFAST's are a BIG value!!! 

I need to devote MORE space on my website for breakfast....it is VERY deserving!  VALUE!  VALUE!

We were discussing this last night, due to a recent TA review about the value of our extra person charge...When we broke down all of the costs (laundry & ruined laundry, utilities, food, labor, etc) and took into consideration all of the forum replies to the poll, we figured we are just about average in pricing for extra persons. When we look at breakfast, we also have to consider all of the specialty ingredients we must purchase to provide a "gourmet" breakfast.

Yes you can get a rooty-tooty for $3.99 at a diner, but are they serving organic local produce like heirloom tomatoes, fresh organic basil, homegrown fruits like peaches and plums and apricots, made with locally raised free range chicken eggs (I can actually visit the chickens that make our eggs), healthy vegetarian options, organic milk, canned and dry goods that are unprocessed, GMO and BPA free,  locally roasted coffee with free refills on coffee and orange juice? Not to mention paying any staff an actual living wage for the preparation and clean up, the cost of gas and time to shop for the specialty items at specialty stores and farmers markets, which we actually do!

And what if your guests are allergic to everything and you are the wonderful innkeeper who goes to the trouble to provide them with the gluten free, "blah, blah free" expensive substitutes for all of their needs? (Which we no longer do!)

No, if you went to the restaurant in town that would offer such a breakfast, which does not exist here, I bet you would be paying about $25 a head just for breakfast, not including the lodging portion for an extra person.

I just googled a random gourmet organic restaurant and they want $3.95 just for a fruit cup!! There you have it! $9.25 for a veggie omelet with a biscuit or toast or potatoes...and $2.45 for the coffee and $3.95 for the orange juice! So, that would be $28.90!! Yep, I nailed it! When you come to our place you get the omelet with the pancake or waffle of the day and fruit or potatoes and coffee and juice. Granted it is chef's choice, but it is always worth it! Wow!devil

In Miami, Florida, I can say that breakfast at a Cuban cafe is still cheap - all over Miami.  The Cuban special:  For $2.99 you get two eggs (any way you like them), Cuban toast, a breakfast potato of some sort (it varies depending on where the cafe owners are from), and cafe con leche (or American coffee, but no one ever asks for that).  For $2.00 more, you can add bacon and sausage and pancakes.  I don't how how they do all that for that small price once you start thinking about the cost of food, the labor, and the overhead of having a building for the restaurant, and still turn a profit.  You can't get all that at an American fast food joint for that price.

What's the orange juice run? 

We were in Las Vegas and I had the steak and eggs for $1.49 with a tall glass of water. My friends all have the eggs with ham for $0.99 with a coffee. Coffee was $1.49. I couldn't stop chuckling.

we get this a bit as we do some offers with the national newspapers which are room only and then you can charge what you like for breakfast

Customer "I can get a full english for £4.50 at Wetherspoons)

Me "and would you like a cup of tea or juice with that? that will be £1.75, would you like some cereal? that will be £3.00, would you like a refill on your tea? that will be another £1.75, would you like some fruit or yogurt? that will be another £2 each - so the £6.50 we are charging is really good value isn't it?

 

Customer - yes id never thought about it that way!

and thats my point!

YES!

I say this all the time, 100%, go eat out and see the lack of fresh, the no fruit, the lack of service, the lack of presentation... DEVOTE MUCH MORE TIME TO YOUR FANTASTIC BREAKFASTS!!

It is a real eye opener, we offer more juice? wow
