We have recently had a smart meter installed for the electric, which phones the electric company regularly so they never have to call round to read the meter.
One benefit of this is they supplied a gizmo that displays the amount of electricity you are using at the moment, and has a little light on the top which shows green for low consumption, amber or red for high. I have it sitting on the shelf in the kitchen.
Things that help make it go red the most are the iron, the kettle, the tumble dryer and to an extent the oven. The time it is most likely to go red is in the morning, I guess when all the guests get up and put their room kettles on.
