The slow slide into obscurity

Just checked my TA ranking. We've gone from 3rd to 5th in a week. I hate popularity contests. 5th out of 8 is pretty crappy. So, I go forth from here with not a care in the world! Yay! Kind of like finding out you're not seeded in a tennis match. No one cares how you do so you play for fun.

I'm #1 of 3, but it doesn't matter, because nobody knows my town and looks at my listing that way.

You had 6 reviews in the last 30 days. While the top guy had 13. It's not just the ratings, it's the number of people in the last 90 days plus the ratings, plus lookups.
That said, from the first 5 there isn't a real black mark on any of them, you all have 5 eyes, not a bad choice in the bunch.
It's like in my city, you have to get to number 17 before someone loses a half an eye. Not that I understand how number 1 is number 1, as their location is far off the beaten path.

I think I have had one this year...but I might get more because I posted a tantrum photo link on another thread here of the tantrum thrower. He kind of insinuated TA to one of our innmates.

I'm #1 of 1, thanks to my 1 review. Thanks, Innkeep! I've had lots of nice comments from guests. Finally got enough to add a "reviews" page to the website, but nobody wants to give a TA review.

6 reviews has to be a record. We generally get 1/month. Given that we had around 100 different guests in that time frame it's not a lot of reviews. Plus, a lot of guests come as a group and one person writes a review for 3-4 rooms. (I guess I should be thankful for that!)
I go thru this every August. I should know better than to let it get me but it's also the time of year. Everyone here knows what a strain the 'seasonal' guests are. Now we are back to just a couple of rooms/day and life will get easier. I won't be cleaning rooms until 2 PM, I'll be able to go out and do stuff like lunch and my book group. I'll relax again.

I'm waiting for that... basically it quiets down a bit, but it's only gets really quiet after the leafs are gone.

I think we are all trying too hard to convey how good we are. I rank 2 out of 3 and I know we have a better product. I have so many thank you cards in my office that I started decoupaging them on my desk and still ran out of space. No trip adv. postings. And I don't want them anymore.

I know I don't have words of comfort for you, but if there were a way to rank my city on TA I'm sure it would be in the last 10 percentile. So my ranking doesn't really help me much at all. Helps even less than the sign out in front of my place. I've had 2 people call in 2 days to say they never knew I was here even though they travel my street every day.

I don't think ANYBODY is trying to convey how good they are. Being #1 of 1 in town means you're in last place every bit as much as in first place!

I'm the same as you, I'm #1 out of 4 but no one is ever going to search for our village name, even some people in Inverness 10 miles down the road haven't heard of it.

'Knowing' you have a better product doesn't help when the market you are in is filled with people who know they have a better product and do a better job of handling their guests. Sure you've got all those thank you's (I have about 5 in 10 years and just went out for dinner on one of them) but no one sees your desk when they are looking for a place to stay. And if comparing thank you's got guests I would have closed years ago.
What they see is that guests are unhappy online. Guests online don't like the product. My guest cohort skews to the older guest. No matter what anyone says about the baby boomers taking over facebook, mine do not write reviews. The reviews I have are from a younger cohort. (Under 50 for the most part. The majority of my guests are over 60. So it's a teeny percentage who write the reviews.
That's all I'm trying to get across. I do NOT have a better product than the top 2 B&B's and I know that. But I have the product I can provide without making myself sick with constant 'doing'.
