Some of you will remember Thruston. I posted a "Its been nice knowing you to the PAII Forum since my time there is about to end. I explained I am not going away mad, just that I do not have enough dollars to give PAII for what they want now. I mentioned that I was on another Forum. Thurston referred to this a "nothing but rant...." THAT is why I am huffy. SHE was never ripped that I can remember!! SHE just gave me something to rant about! Grrrrrrrr

I've seen the occasional rant on PAII. Occasional just because occasionally is how often there is a new post there.
There's no comparison in the value of the two forums. Much more useful info here.
I've been away from PAII about 3 months now. I have not missed Thurston. Or the railroad car b&b guy there who called Little Rock the armpit of the world, in a rant about the PAII convention being in Little Rock last year (he didn't go...just ranting from California with typical stereotypes against Arkansas).
I called him a horrible person. I was right. Forgive my rant.

You rant away, we all need a good rant now and again, and this seems the perfect venue.
I don't know what PAll is but if they think this forum is nothing but rants they've obviously not spent much time here. It's invaluable even for someone like me in a different country where many of the references are irrelevant.
Ps: I don't mean irrelevant in a negative way

Even when I was with PAII I never used their form. I always like this one.

Professional Association of Innkeepers, International. It's the main national B&B association in the US (the "International" in their name is kind of a joke, like "World Series" is with baseball). They have a big yearly convention, a quarterly magazine of great articles, and are the main B&B advocates when it comes to getting B&B's issues before TripAdv. and the government.
They're OK, but they more than tripled their yearly membership fees this year so a lot of us smaller operators dropped out. And some of us are a bit bitter about their lack of concern for the smaller inns.

Hey, there are like 3 Canadians in the association.

I wouldn't be too upset about the PAII forum response from Thurston, Guillum. When I read it, I didn't get the impression that she meant any disrespect (I certainly don't,either). But,if you think about it, what she said was true...in this forum, we can say whatever we want (which is great!), but Innspiring.com is not going to be able to go to bat for us as business-owners in our industry should we have an issue that needs addressing at a higher level. Innspiring.com does not pretend to be anything that it's not.
I sort of look at PAII as an insurance policy, glad to pay for something that provides a benefit that I hope I'll never need. It does, however, provide many benefits that I do partake of. I'm not that big, only 5 rooms, but I'm in a major tourist area. Yes, it was unfortunate that they raised their rates the way they did, but they are running a business, too.

And we even have an option for it "Chat, Vent, Laugh, Cry"

This forum provides enough dram-uh for this innkeeper.

And if their business had nudged their rates up over a few years, they'd have kept a lot more "customers"! Any business will face a rebellion if it triples it's rates in one fell swoop.

I never found any value to their forum.. none, nada, etc...
Yes we vent, like we are right now but 99% of the posts here are providing valuable information even when we are venting! Some will read, learn, and enlighten while others will skim and desert, fine by me.

It was the referring to this Forum as a rant place that got my dander up. The PAII Forum is usually so dead that I only check it once in a while. Everyone tries to be so PC and un-offending. I prefer to be offended once in a while, go off and pout, and then come back for more. Often the "offending comment" was right.

I read the comment on the other forum and it's definitely a comparison to forums. I check on the PAII forum about once a week or so. Sometimes there is a nugget of information there I take in, but there is no comparison to what happens here. Yes, we vent sometimes, but the information on this forum is AMAZING. The support for each other is AMAZING.
The one thing that drives me batty over there is someone will vent, but instead of letting them vent, there are people who chastise them for not being hospitable or some such nonsense.

Sometimes there are crappy things that happen.
I was on a forum before the one prior to this (not Paii) and was basically told I was an inadequate innkeeper, over and over again if I had a guest who was not perfect or ideal. Made me feel like a pork chop at a Jewish picnic!
Also reminded me of a friend in school whose car broke down and how the mother said "What did YOU do to it?" Uh, the dumb thing broke down, it is a piece-o-crap, has nothing to do with the owner. But she got blamed, always did, for piece-o-crap.
"You do not wait up for guests until 2am? Shame on you bad bad hospitality inferior innkeeper...you put us all to shame." in a nutshell
oh and self check-ins are a sin... jus' sayin'...

Oh my god!! Talk about a rant. I took that as a define stab at some thing she feels she does not DO??? surely if she reads what she wrote I call that a rant ... Yes you are entitle to YOUR opinion. But surly as a professional surly you could be kinder
Ms Thurston. I found this place a wonder place of learning. The real way it is not just fluff and feathers! People really say what they mean with no icing on top. Yes some times it stings. But your rant on PAll comes with not a nice feeling either.
PAII I find has not given us anything back. They cannot do a thing for us in this country. They have no idea how we run our INNs or B&Bs. But they are the first to say how can we help or you can do it our way. No we cannot, our rules are different just like state rules differ from one state to another. Air is a prime example. PAII can do nothing to help in these matters. Ok I just did a rant ! yep I sure did .
Hey Ark you put it so well
heart.gif
Why they side with Ta . Do you really feel TA has our backs ?? No they have our pockets.
Our association has just tried to up the anty all or nothing. Think the cards will fall and lose more B&Bs , so so sad . But hey you can display their sign that you paid for in return to use on your site or window or sign post. For only a hundred dollars.... You can say you belong. The only thing wrong is nobody know what the sign is or what it stand for.

I am not a PAII member, never have been so I can't read or know what goes on there. But to compare this forum to theirs is like apples to oranges. We are not the same. She left here...I can't remember why now..but I believe she had her feelings hurt. So be it. We don't pussy foot around here. We tell it like it is from experienced innkeepers. But we also show our support as well. We are lots of friends with many year's connections. Some of us..from the very beginning of the "about. com" forum and then set up this one together Don't know how many can say they are "friends" on the other forum.

A pork chop at a Jewish picnic will be fought over... a pork chop at a religious Jewish picnic.... maybe :)

Yeah, you have to be careful what you say on PAII. If you complain about poor service from a vendor, or about problems with TA, for example you get your rant slapped down by you know who who always chastises you for complaining, and then says, "not meant to chastise"....

Okay, I will change my comment, to a the "redheaded step child..." :) haha See I can say things like that here, no offense to any red headed step children, but if you are then you understand the comment.

and from there I went to About.com and peeved everyone off and then we formed this new forum to just be us. Imperfect, super useful and helpful us.
