OK, it's not tomorrow yet but they're not here for their 4 PM arrival time. I just turned the heat off in the room but will leave the lights on anyway.
So, I've gone both ways with this...
  • Do you call in the morning to verify they are not going to show up tomorrow night either?
  • If they say, 'Oh, we were coming Sat & Sun NOT Fri & Sat' do you charge them for 3 nights?
  • Or do you just charge them as no shows and send the information to them?
  • Call them right now?
Because we had so few rooms tonight I never sent out my 3 day advance notice. I'm thinking I really need to do that religiously. Or not. They ARE adults. And they only made the rez 10 days ago.

I had a no show a few days ago. They never called and I never called or sent anything to them. I don't want the confrontation and the only time I've ever called a no show the guy told me he didn't call because he knew he was going to have to "eat it" anyway.
This summer I had a 4 night res...no show on first night and they showed up the next afternoon. To make matters worse, she thought she had a 2 night reservation. She had to pay for the 4 nights.
I'm not their parent and it's their responsibility. I also don't send reminder e-mails because I don't want to deal with the drama when all of a sudden there's a reason why they can't fulfill their part of our contract.

It's a very strange month. So far I've had 5 room nights that were reserved and not used. This is unprecedented!

Excellent questions. So far I haven't had a no show, but I've had several arrive after 10 p.m. which made me wonder how I'd handle a no show. Obviously, they get charged, but to call? To just sit and wonder? What to do about the other nights of the reservation? All good questions.
And I don't have the answer either!

Maddie, does your policy state they will be responsible for all nights reserved?.
Yes. No shows are charged for all nights reserved.
But, worry no more, they just rolled in.

I'm playing the waiting game tonight. Already charged their card for the full stay, and as of 9 p.m. they haven't arrived. But I try not to worry.
I said I try. That doesn't mean I don't worry!

I'm hoping we see them in the morning. Remember the last one we had that checked themselves in didn't leave until 12:30 and cleared out the linen closet sometime during their stay.
Which reminds me... We never did get a lock for that door.

I'm glad they made it! No shows are stressful. I always think they will show up the next day and worry about it.

if they aren't with us by last check in I charge the card then call - don't get many no shows but the last one's reason was "you couldn't make it up" - she was coming for business meetings the next day - set off for her half way car broke down (really filthy night) so had to be towed home, neighbour was supposed to be looking after her pet chicken for the 3 days she was to be away met her in the drive - can't find the chicken, Two women running round the garden in a panic in the dark and rain with flash lights looking for the ruddy chicken who in the mean time had toddled back into the hen house and was safe and dry!

Welcome to JB's world...where you get the early checkins Madds, my Friday nights are ALWAYS super late check ins. If there are 5 rooms on a Friday 3 of them will be at or after 10pm!
And people USED to be on my case about self check ins, that was when I hated innkeeping. Up at 7am for breakfast, work all day and expected to be waiting for someone at 11pm to check in? I am glad none of "you people are those people" they have their own forums.

We tell our guests to call if they are arriving later than their stated check-in time because their room will be locked and they will need to arrange for a self check-in.
We are so remote that I usually call to make sure they're not lost or in a ditch. If they don't call or otherwise show by the time I go to bed, I turn off the lights, heat and refrigerator and lock the cabin.
It's in our policies and 3-day reminder that they will be charged the full amount. I've never been challenged.
DW is pissed because she got up early to create a nice breakfast for four. One room just called (at least they called) to let us know that they were skipping breakfast. She could have just made a simpler breakfast for two instead. Wasted food!

We take a 2-night or 50% (whichever is greater) deposit with a 30 day cancellation....by check. So their money is usually in our bank at least a few days before their reservation. We rarely get no shows and do not hesitate to call them if they are more than 2 hours past their agreed upon check-in time. We make it sound like we are concerned and want to make sure that we are available to greet them so they are not left waiting at the door. It usually works to move them along or at least to let us know about what time we should expect them. But we do not send out reminders in advance.
You might remember my angst over the guy a couple of years ago that had a 10 night reservation, paid up the 50% deposit and did not show up until the 5th night of his reservation. We e-mailed him every day starting on day #1 of his reservation. Every day he said he would be there...but alas, he didn't show up until the 5th night. Before we let him in his room we collected the balance due, cash only from this guy. If he had not arrived on the 5th night we would have resold the last 5 nights of his reservation and he knew that. Some people are just weird. This one was a real piece of work!!!

Spoke too soon! The 2-nighter who was due last night still hasn't appeared. But he was confirmed on the dates, knows his card has already been charged in full, and if he chooses not to use what he paid for, that's his business! And less laundry for me to do!
