After 21 years, B&B owner moving on
“They always tell you ... to buy an existing bed and breakfast,” Hoyt said — advice she herself didn't heed. She bought the historic building in 1992 and spent a ..
Excerpt:
Marcia Hoyt has some advice for anyone thinking about starting a bed and breakfast: “Have lots of money."
Note from JB -- Oddly enough people come to this forum and think innkeeping is where you end up when you have NO MONEY. "I lost my job so maybe I can run an inn...the banks won't loan, but we have good credit?!"

I wonder why the potshot “Unfortunately, a lot of people in the bed-and-breakfast world are very rigid” about timing, she said. She recommends keeping a flexible, relaxed schedule whenever possible. That was an unnecessary poke at other innkeepers. I guess she never heard about my breakfast times.
And yes, have lots of money IS good advice. Several here bought existing and discovered lots more money was needed (although when THEY hand off, all will be as it should be). We have probably poured 2 to 3 times what we paid for the house into doing the upgrades to electricity (60 amp to 200), windows (replaced 29 windows), plumbing (remodel 2 bathrooms (thank you, kids, for the OQ bath) and create 1 private bath), siding, roof, furnace & A/C, sidewalk .......... 2014 will be the year of the yard I hope.

So, she had what? 2 rooms? No way you get more than 4 done in the time frame she allowed herself. And no one called or rang the bell in that time?
Agreed it was a pot shot at someone to say innkeepers should be more flexible. Wonder who she had in mind when she said that? Why not just retire gracefully?
You know, I sometimes start cleaning rooms at 9:30 and don't finish until 2 pm. I can be flexible as all get out but the incoming guests don't care that the outgoing guests wanted to extend breakfast by another 2 hours!

Odd... makes it sound like hardly any work then says "work is never-ending"
BTW 5 reviews on T/A in 21 years! Must be full all the time!
