Well, it's getting close to that time again...

  • what is the ONE new thing you're going to try this year?
  • AND, what is the one thing you are tossing out the window from last year?

We've done enough "throw it against the wall to see what sticks" marketing the last two years, that we've figured out where our leads are coming from.  We're scaling back our print marketing and focusing on the ones that are truly bringing us business and then nurturing the personal connections we've made around town.  We get more word-of-mouth referrals from the Chamber, other downtown businesses and cabin rental companies than anything else.  We need to fluff their feathers more in 2014 to keep our momentum.

Had dinner in a nice restaurant at Christmas, when we paid the bill they gave us an envelope. On the front it said that the envelope contained a voucher for either 25%, 50% or 100% off our next food bill in Jan/Feb but we were not allowed to open the envelope just present it when we come back and are paying the bill. That seemed like a fun idea and I'm going to adapt for our use.

Out with the old....... bye bye boo kin gdotc om. Didn't really work for us, hoped it would increase our off season occupancy but all that's happened is the same occupancy but giving them 15% for their bookings.

I would love to have any and all of the Innspiring folks come see us - either as a stopover or to SEE my West Virginia. Just give a yell!

For some reason I picture a big sign as you enter West Virginia with a photo of Gillum and quote "Welcome to my West Virginia I am here to help!" with her bluetooth on her ear. (...and in the background some commotion with her saying to 'Himself' "shut up you son-of-a-xxxxx I am on the phone with guests!")

Well, you met him. I was able to retrace some of the calls he did not take numbers for but not the GC that is lost and gone forever. Negativity again reigns.

His lamp at his drawing boatd just died so I must brave the elements to go get another.  Sigh!

Hmmm. Borrowing from JB for the 500th time, maybe I'll start doing handwritten personalized welcome notes too...if only they would give me all the names when they make the reservation. It wouldn't be much trouble (other than trouble for them reading my handwriting).

Maybe I can leave off listing first names, and just say I'm so happy to welcome the Smiths to my place.

You gotta roll with the punches Arks. Use whatever they give ya, that is enough.  When I have anniversaries I sometimes only write "Welcome Love Birds" or something silly. I think they get a chuckle out of it, esp if it is a high numbered anniv like gold.

The things I will try NEXT YEAR, NEXT WEEK, meaning 2014?

Oh I have a few up my sleeve. One thing I am going to continue to do is have a personalized note in each guest room for every guest. Welcome "Madelein and Snookums" or whatever.

My postcards were a wash.

I won't email or burden anyone with too many emails, I am beginning to HATE companies who keep emailing me over and over. Companies I actually used to like, btw.

Other things...hm, I am full steam ahead for 2014! It will be a banner year for us. One reason is we will officially be over the 10 year hump and into our 11th year. There is a new kid in town, a B&B being bought, remodeled and operated by a partnership (altho I know they paid less than they would have if they bought this B&B I am sitting in now) and could open day 1.

Our new Music Venus is scheduled to open in April. With a well respected (by me) proper promoter and manager, I am planning on great things! I am not sure what or when, but they WILL happen.

I also have a ball jar of moonshine sitting next to my desk still, so if I run out of ideas... cool

I am tossing my print ad for bike/hike.

I am going to concentrate on Elopements this year. I stated talking about it in Spring of 2013 but the decorating  never got done and then the wind wrecked my venue. I am hoping the uniqueness of the log house will bring them in.

Update: I am keeping my Internet horse listings but going to deep-six the print. Just got my first horse inquiry for 2014 and it was the $40 per year followed by a look at the $35 per year sites that brought him to me. The horse magazine is beautiful, but after about 4 years of not being able to tag anything to it, time to go. I think I gave it fair chance to work.

im getting my mailing lists sorted - using Mail chimp can divide  into categories ie people come for a specific event, holidays etc so I can do more targeted emailings more easily - rather than my old software which you could only target people by month or everyone which isn't as useful, ie I have people who come every year for specific events but because they have been they won't come at any other time so its no use sending them a blanket come and visit email.
