This is not really written for our industry but several of the reasons do relate.
http://bit.ly/1djtyeV
1) Easier to buy: I relate this to our websites - make it easy to book, link to your online booking on each page
3) Must have feature: We each have this, what is yours? Do you shout it out on your site?
5)Cost of Ownership (staying): I relate this to the ease of the stay
6)Customer Service: Does this even need an explanation?

Or they won't. I got a phone call from an enthusiastic young man last night at 11:10 pm asking what our rates would be for "tonight". Because we were in the midst of a 6" snowfall, my first question was if he was stranded. "No, but I could be". I happily quoted our rate including amenities, to which he replied "You've gotta be kidding me". I immediately thought of one of my roadtrip innmates and happily went back to sleep.

I get those, and, because I really don't want to take phone reservations, my phone number is only listed on the website. It's not in any directory and I rarely put it in advertisements. So if they can click "Contact Info" on the menu and find the phone number on the website, why can't they see "Rates & Availability" on the menu right beside "Contact Info"?
All the answers are there. Why call? Do they think it's cheaper if you call? If anything, I'd charge them extra!!

And why I stopped answering the phone at 9pm. I know you were thinking they may be stranded and your thoughtful side took charge. Good you had someone to put you back in good vibes.

To quote another innmate " Nothing good comes from answering a call after 9pm"...

Had a guy call a couple days ago asking if we had availablity. Told him yes, and quoted the lowest priced room and he was shocked. I asked him how he got our number. He said he googled our specific little area hotel.
This guy got our website and before he even looked at the first page, he called. NO CLUE!!
I told him to google a local motel.
At least it wasn't in the middle of the night!

Yep! I had a young guy call and leave messages two days in a row recently for what he described as "maybe for a month or more". I didn't return his call because I was suspicious of anybody who doesn't have a more definite plan than "maybe".
On the third day my sister called me. The guy was at her store and she had just showed him through my guesthouse across the street. He wanted to stay a month, starting that day. I quickly quoted the monthly rate and the guy nearly fainted. I told him my monthly rate was lower than he'd pay at the Days Inn here in town, and at my place he'd have a large apartment with full kitchen so he wouldn't have the expense of eating every meal out.
He said, "Yeah, I guess that's right. I can't afford Days Inn either." Never heard from him again. Have no idea what bridge he's now living under.
I did, however, make double sure the burglar alarm was turned back on that night!

You should have told him it was a guest house, not a flop house! Sheesh!
