Greetings Select Registry Members:

On behalf of your Board of Directors, the Leadership Transition Team is delighted to announce that our nationwide CEO search is now complete. We are thrilled to share the news with you that Mr. Jay L. Karen has accepted the position of CEO and will join Select Registry beginning April 1, 2014.

Mr. Karen's extensive association and management credentials combined with his solid understanding of the hospitality industry make him uniquely qualified to lead SR into the future. Many of you may know Mr. Karen (Jay) from his involvement with the Professional Association of International Innkeepers, (PAII) where he served as President and CEO of that organization since 2007.

Jay's dedication to the world of hospitality was solidified during his leadership of PAII where he oversaw all aspects of the 2000+ member Association and managed a full-time staff of eight employees and dozens of volunteers. A few highlights of Jay's achievements with PAII include:

Reversing shrinking membership trends and creating new sources of revenue
Launching the industry’s first ever grass roots campaign to dispel myths about the B&B industry and promote B&B’s as a “Better Way To Stay”
Hosting and improving numerous regional and national industry conferences, including the Innkeeping Conference and Trade Show
Representing the industry's interest with companies like Trip Advisor and Yelp, and various legislative and public policy officials

During his tenure with The National Golf Course Owners Association, (1997 – 2007) Jay catapulted from conference and tradeshow coordinator, to managing contractual agreements between suppliers and members, to directing membership operations for 6,200 golf courses, to managing partner relations representing $2,000,000 in gross revenues.

As a young man just out of college, Jay’s involvement with Kappa Sigma International provided the opportunity to direct progress in the areas of academics, risk management, substance abuse education, alumni programming, financial management and new member recruitment and education. Jay was instrumental in founding chapters at Cornell University, Northeastern University, University of Toronto and University of Pittsburgh.

Jay is well-versed in cutting edge marketing practices and is adept at utilizing technology to capture and elevate market position. He has a proven track record with membership recruitment and retention programs and a strong financial background.

The Leadership Transition Team was wholly impressed with Jay's answer to the question: What experiences and specific skills will you bring to SR? To which Jay responded "I am a change agent, entrepreneur, team leader and dedicated association executive. My proudest moments have always been when I had a hand in creating new programs, services or revenue streams. I am passionate about this industry and would be honored to join the Select Registry team. I believe the vision for SR is clear and bright and would love the opportunity to be a part of SR’s next chapter.”

Jay holds a Master of Arts degree in American History from the College of Charleston and is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) by the American Society of Association Executives. Jay also serves on the board of directors of the United States Travel Association and the Executive Advisory Board for the College of Charleston Hospitality and Tourism Management degree program.

On a personal note, Jay was born in Oyster Bay, New York and raised near Atlanta, Georgia. He is married to Carrie Lyndrup and they have two children, Marley and Jonah. Travel, photography, physical training, golf and cooking are among Jay’s many hobbies and interests.

Having been charged with finding the most qualified and capable CEO to lead the management operations of our unique and prestigious Association, your Board is confident with its decision and speaks with one voice. Jay's extensive knowledge of our industry and his ability to literally "hit the ground running" combined with the great gift of time that our current CEO, Phil Jenkins, has so graciously provided us with further solidifies that we have made an informed and excellent choice.

The Board would like to extend tremendous thanks to Cheryl Ronk, President of MSAE, and Sue Radwan from Leading Edge Mentoring for providing guidance to the Board’s Leadership Transition Team (Ellen Grinsfelder, Dan Brown, Ed Kivett, Mark Reichle and Theresa Stavens) during the executive search and interview process.

We hope you will join us in our enthusiasm and welcome Mr. Jay Karen as Select Registry’s next CEO!

Respectfully,
Your SR Board of Directors

One can only hope. I was ready to leave them this year but I would like to see how this goes. I was in favor of this move about four years ago - SR was losing their ED and there was talk of having Jay do both PAII and SR. The SR selection committee at that time went another direction, and now, 2 or 3 EDs later, is finally taking the plunge. Not that my input had anything to do with it - I'm a pretty small fish in the SR pond. I feel an 'I told you so' coming on, though...

For what it costs you to be a SR member, both financially and keeping high standards, you certainly deserve someone at the helm that will make your membership worthwhile! SR is not a big player here in the Northwest, but who knows, that may change in the future.
