A friend of mine just posted this on his FB page. He's not an innkeeper, but his statement is very profound. Sometimes it just takes a little tweek:
"Sometimes a tiny tweak in perception can change your whole outlook. This one changed mine: High quality questions bring high quality answers. Example of a Low quality Q: Why don't I make more money? Low quality A: I'm ugly, not smart enough, talented enough, worthy enough, etc. Notice that each answer takes you AWAY from a solution. But here's the same question in High quality form: What can I do to make more money? A tiny tweak, yet now each answer leads toward a solution. Answers: Learn a new skill, get a haircut, practice, market yourself, find new ways to improve. It's a tiny tweak that makes an incredible difference as the years go by. And if you're a parent... it works instantly with your children. Has a perception tweak like this ever worked for you?" - a quote from G.G.

A perfect example of this was the Hotel on Hotel inspector last night - really nice place and nice people - hotel inspector virtually said I don't know what to do to help them! For myself I could see these things right off.
(1) the were near an airport, 80% occupancy but at a cheap price to compete with the budget hotels round the airport and all one night stays - Step 1 start looking at other markets than just the airport trade ie get them in more than 1 night, they also did dinners
(2) huge barn they had built (really lovely function space) stood empty ie weddings, dances, meetings - all sorts
(3) 34 acres of land - doing nothing! team building also I would have expanded into camping and Glamping - again extended market
(4) work on direct bookings - they did a quick spin past the office and I could see they we using laterooms - 17% commission PLus VAT which is about %20 - so you want to work on your web site to increase your direct bookings so you aren't paying $20 a booking to someone else
(5) social media, blogging and mailing list
(6) very close to London - could easily target that get away for the weekend but it's near enough to be convenient market.
(7) dinners/catering is there anyone else in the area you can sell them to?

I saw this. I did wonder about the windows, if they were double or triple glazed, because you kept on hearing the airplanes go by outside but not inside. You would think that would be a selling point too.

I wish we could watch that show! It was on our BBC America for a while, I am not sure if I can find it again.

.
and they are just the ones I thought of during the fricking program!
Also my dad (we are very alike) said how about car parking while you are away on holiday ie you stay, you and a staff member drive them to the airport about 10 mins away and bring the car back - stores for a week then picks you up at the airport - or taxis with a commission, whatever works - cost car storage aint cheap! plus you are guaranteed a booking at both ends of the holiday.
