When there is noone scratching back

This forum is a unique and diverse place. We have innkeepers from all walks of life with their own style of innkeeping, and a variety of inns.

We call each other innmates for a reason. Not only do we share some of the bad stuff, give warnings about inferior products or services, we also share the good stuff encouraging one another and trying to help out.

Muirford shared the ebook from a dynamic speaker Marcus Sheridan at the PAII conference. I really dug what he said, I read the whole thing! Here is an article about him "Is Answering Your Customers’ Questions the Best Marketing Strategy?"

So...I read and saw how to blogged about the top 10 pool companies, and this was something people googled and it brought his business back from the brink of disaster.

I did the same. I put together a list of the "Best Places to Elope in SW Virginia" and now when people google they will find this list. BTW it was not easy to put this together, half the places I googled had no info about their elopements, all of them were like a needle in a haystack to get the concise info (sharing that for a reason). So I found those who were simply the easiest, most information, and user friendly. Places I REALLY would recommend if someone asked me.

The point of the author/speaker is that YOU ARE an expert in your field, go ahead and create YOUR TOP 10 List, or whatever you want, YOUR POV is very worthwhile.

Back to my blog article...I emailed each of the top elopement inns and shared this list with them. These are all neighboring inns, so to speak. Within an hour+ from us.

You can guess the rest of the story...not one replied, not one said thank you, nada zilch. It has blown me away really.

I will continue to do what I do, and include references to you, my innmates whenever possible, recommending you to our guests, talking about your places and sharing you on all social media. Thank you for scratching my back, appreciate it!

I am with ya!  Constant referrals, free marketing via blog posts and social media and then nothing.  But recently got some 'thank you gifts' for my efforts.

I would much prefer them touting MY business as I have done for theirs.  Sorry to say but the locals do not get it.  That has been for years.

I did a search and cannot find the thread where I mentioned this photoshoot. I asked the photographer for a couple images with a credit to the Claiborne House B&B. I never got the images.  So I emailed and asked again. I think verbally it is being said our B&B. I am sure people are asking "Where did you take these?"

So here they are, a couple examples with permission from those photographed. There were dozens here for this, a hair dresser stylist etc as well.  The photographer is respectful and I am recommending her.

Beautiful Impressions at The Claiborne House

Nice. When the Press was here for the Elopement, I said the name of our local florist where I got the flowers in hope that will be mentioned also. Helping each other is what it is all about. I am with you wishing there were more people who understood the concept.

Agree. I just don't get it when folks can't / won't cooperate. Our town is a tourism town, but everyone seems to be out for #1 Sad

Yes but in being out for number 1 they don't get as much as they could do ie I run an informal room list for when its busy ie I keep track and people know to let me know so they can get them shifted.

This has the side benefit of me getting first crack at any stragglers and doesn't cost me much time or effort + plus it keeps me in the minds of the other bb owners and means the vast majority owe me favours from all the bookings ive sent their way over the years - so I give and organise and in return it benefits me and the customer.

Just this week got a lovely email from a customer I sorted out with a room for Le Tour De France who wanted to come for 4 nights with his wife but they had despaired of getting in anywhere at this late stage - sorted in a lovely property within 7 minutes walking distance of the finish line - and I also have his email to add to my database.

It also means when I have guests who have run screaming out of my next door neighbours I have somewhere on hand to send them to.

I HEAR YOU SISTAH!

It happens to me over and over. I'm constantly posting about other businesses in the area that I think my guests would enjoy. What do I get back? NADA. Even my own chamber, I called and spoke with the pres and then followed up with an e-mail..the topic was just to add my elopement/wedding link to my listing and suggesting that they add a get married section to the site. Oh, yes...great idea...we'll do it...thank you...great to work with you...... NADA

I thought your blog on the places to elope was great. I tried to steal create one myself. I couldn't even find 5 places that listed their services. Oh yeah, they said on a page of their site they do weddings/elopements, but didn't have enough information to help anyone!

I don't get it. Are we the only ones that care?

By the way, there are a few of us on here that share each other's posts, and it's a wonderful thing.

Believe me it constantly astounds me how crap other people are! You get some businesses who you offer to do a blog for and they send you the stuff same day and are really interested - others you might as well bang your head on the wall!

I was afraid you might not be happy with me adding stuff about WV when I do a share on your VA FB posts. I try to not to co-opt them, just add that we also have them and that we are "neighbors".

By all means do that! Absolutely! I appreciate it.
