Upstairs is almost ready for tomorrow. I baked the cake this afternoon and iced it tonight after band rehearsal. I need to order smaller separator plates - these are just a hair too big or I have to get a larger size heart pan for the bottom tier. I made my Mom's cherry cake recipe for the cake. It turned out nicely (my top trim could have been better - it has been a while since I did cakes). 9 AM in the hairdresser's chair, 10 AM pick up the flowers, 11 AM Bride, Groom, kids, and The Press are due to arrive. 11:45 we go over to the log house and Noon is Show Time!!
Talked to the Editor of the Lifestyle Section today - she had something come up and cannot come but is sending a reporter/videographer AND a photographer. The story will be in the May 4 edition!! More photos will follow, but here is a shot of the cake I took tonight.

Not the best I have ever done, but not my worst either. Wish me luck - that this will bring lots more!

To save yourself the hassle of doing wedding cakes, why don't you make some kind of deal with one of the local bakeries or wedding cake baker? I would never want to take the time to make an actual wedding cake. For most elopements around here, they just have the food lion bakery do the cake and it is a simple one layer cake for just a couple. I think you are not going to be making much off elopements when you work yourself so hard.

But that is what makes it so special - the cake was made for them. They get a layer to cut and eat and the layer to freeze - just as they would at a "big wedding". For a lot of people (I was one myself) the "dream wedding" was just that, a dream due to $$$. That I was making the cake also impressed the hell out of the Editor. She called to tell me the names of the 2 gentlemen who are coming up to cover the story. While we chatted about what all was in the package the cake was mentioned. I told her that as the phone rang, I was about to put the wedding cake in the oven and that I had made my Mother's recipe for the cake. She was impressed by that and all that I was including. I want these to be special - not the same thing they can get just anywhere. THIS one is so stressful because the Press will be here - and it is my only shot at it. PLUS it is one of the big-time papers in the State. Off to the hairdresser!! All is as ready as it can be. Recharged all batteries last night - for the video and digital cameras (spares too).

Hope it goes well. Having the press there will give you a great boost! The cake is beautiful.

Wow! This sounds so special. I do have to agree about the cake. At first I thought hire someone, but when someone goes out of their way to MAKE something, with their own hands, the cake (or whatever) just became something so much more than a cake. I realize we can't all do this, all the time, but when we can and we do, special memories are made. The power of giving.

Best of luck with it all. You make me tired with everything you do to make things special.

We hire out the cake for our Elopements. If you start doing as many as we did last year, you may rethink the baking! Sometimes it is just a chore to go pick up the cake!

Again, wishing you the best with this event. Hope the media does justice to all the effort you put forth!

Update: By 2:20 the Press left and the wedding family went out to get some food.
All went well. It was chaos - wonderfully so - the Press did video and the photographer took 360 photos JUST of stuff with the elopement. She also had her cousin who does weddings doing photos - YEA!! I had a hard time getting in - did not want to get in any of the way of others. They insisted that I be in some of the "family" pictures at the log house. EVERYONE was impressed with the cake! The wedding will be in the May 4 paper. The bride was really tickled to have the press - she asked if they always come for the weddings and I told her no, just for yours and that is why I asked permission before telling them they could.
Couple of curves thrown at the last minute and recovered - well will be shortly - bride found out a couple weeks ago that she is GF, but did not tell me until they arrived so the will be is that I am going to into the kitchen soon and make her a loaf of bread for tomorrow's breakfast. They had been married before - to each other - and while they were divorced he had a daughter, now 4. The other curve was the little girl - who was looking for HER flowers. Guests over the weekend had purchased flowers to put on graves and had left behind the extras - so I quickly did some cutting and wrapping with tulle and had a bouquet for the 4 year old.
This day gets even better! The family was upstairs getting into tuxes (bride was going to change into her gown at the log house) when the Press arrived. I took them into my office to get their equipment organized and was telling them about DH's paintings. Once the wedding stuff was done, they started talking to DH and I signaled DH to take them to the "inner sanctum" (VERY FEW have ever been invited there). There is going to be another story on HIM and his paintings!!!!! WOOHOO!!!!!

I was just speaking to someone about a writer's event coming up and I thought, gee wouldn't it be clever to have some young thang with a wedding dress, flowers in her braided hair and a bouquet show up and wander around. (to promote the elopement packages) beats the heck out of a table top display.

So who are you going to get to play the bride?
