During breakfast I get a call, left on answering machine that they would like two rooms. They have already been to our website, they love our place, they know which two rooms they want.
Okay... I am thinking.
"...Can you call us back so we can discuss this, as we can't afford to stay there and want to discuss it with you."
No...I am thinking.

Same day
I go to stuffmart, and am in line at the service center when the the meat dept manager (formerly known as the butcher) comes over and says "Where is it?" The clerk says "here"and hands him a bag, and says "She has already left" and he grumbles something udner his breath.
I turn to him "Bad day?" He sighs. "What happened, if you don't mind me asking, as I am having a bad morning too?"
"A lady cooked this roast, said it was too tough and brought it back."
"You can DO THAT?" Yes he replies. "Buddy you just made my whole day!" I laughed and slapped him on the shoulder.
(I had one room only and they came into the kitchen at 833AM after table was set and food is prepped and ready to tell me they decided since "they are the only ones here I shouldn't have to go to any trouble" I point to the set table, to the plates already dressed...)

What is the deal with that?
We had a guy email he couldn't find anywhere to stay for x week and could we put him up in exchange for...
Him and family. For a week.
I like a lot of stuff I can't afford! I don't have that stuff.

Right decision. I don't see any way it ends well if you call them.

Like when someone calls at 2am and asks if they woke you?
No, I had to get up to answer the phone anyway.
Sit down and eat your breakfast you silly person!

well, wait. in exchange for what? I mean, I could use a boat. Or a new driveway. You know?

I got this nonsense a few months ago...
...with the request to offer me complimentary board and lodging.... I would be delighted to....
When I told the person that we don't do it, that we see it as unethical and in violation of FTC guidelines in the US they proceeded to call me "ignorant". Because certainly after calling me names, I'm just going to give you stuff for free. And of course, they wanted the best room in the house for most of a week and more. Looked them up on Amazon, written one self-published print-on-demand book for children.

They just called here!
Really love it, can't afford it, can you do it for this price?
I gave them info on way cheaper places.

just go away! the only discount we give is for on line booking. give me a break!
I would be deleting the message! they can call back and if i answer, same thing.

Were they a NH phone # and hick sounding?

I like to respond to things of this nature with "My mortgage company won't allow me to do that". And really...it's not a lie. I've got a bottom line and a budget, just like you do, buddy.

No, slightly farther east.

I work for a grocery store and yes, you can do that. Even better, eat most of it before you bring it back. Or, be like the lady that returned her artisan style bread because it had too many holes in it and then asked if she could take the original loaf back home since we were going to throw it away.

Don't you love it when they want you to subsidize their vacation? I had a near miss from a caller who wanted 4 nights, but when she heard about our 30 day cancellation she whined that she might be staying with friends in a neighboring town, but their house is on the market and if they close a deal she needs a place to stay. When I suggested she book in the large hotel in town she balked. "But I want a really nice place to stay." Bye Bye

I had a call last week from a couple who booked Sunday night. Then they say "we might want to stay Monday night, can you hold the room and we'll let you know on Sunday".
No, I'm not holding a room on the off chance you might want to stay, or might decide not to and leave me with an empty room.

Tell them you'll take their booking at a lower rate, but if subsequently someone else wants the room at the full rate you get to cancel their booking and take the other.
