It's an Enigma

People and Facebook.

There is absolutely no rhyme or reason why people or FB do what they do!

Yesterday, I posted a really great shot I took in the morning of a robin with a worm in it's mouth. I was able to get it up close and I thought our fans would really 'like' it. Of our 2,300+ fans, FB pushed it out to only 210 people and it got only 10 'likes'.

1 hour later, I posted a collage of the horses across the road. Nice pictures, but nothing really exceptional. This picture has gone wild! As of right now, FB has pushed it out to 7,452 views, it's gotten 44 shares, 46 likes and I've gained 11 new 'fans'.

THIS STUFF DRIVES ME CRAZY!!

It's still increasing! 9,764 views, 60 shares and more new fans.

IT'S JUST SOME PRETTY HORSES!! Why has this gone crazy??

Oh I sure hope you have the B&B name on there somewhere. And to let you know, I AM A FAN AND FOLLOWER and have not seen the horses yet in my newsfeed.

Have you looked at your shares? I see quite a few foreign names there.

everyone loves horses.  Note to self - post horse pictures on fb page.....don't worry about the nearest horse being a mile away.

Yes, I have our name .com on the bottom of the picture, but I cut it off for this post.

I've been getting quite a few foreign 'fans' lately. Also, just business types. I don't know what's up with that.

Here's the picture I thought would be popular, but was a big dud! Did you get this one?

This guest we had this morning has some dietary restrictions. Fortunately he brought his own breakfast!

You know what I took pix of that were really wild? The elk on rt 101. No one likes elk. No shares for the elk. Or the burros.

Yea, elk aren't 'cute'. They're really cool to see though.

Last summer I posted several pictures of the deer families that hang out on our property. I got some good conversation from those, but nothing like these horse pictures.

I'm more likely to share a picture of a burrito than a burro.

Are these foreign likes from people who have actually been to your place or countries likely to visit?

Jon, some are and some aren't. It's weird...I just was in Spain on vacation and now I've gotten several fans from Spain. One of them even sent a private message offering their professional commercial photographic services and the message was all in Spanish. That was a weird one. I reported it as spam.

The problem is that you don't want fake likes, they don't really "participate" and therefore they actually lower your audience.

The people who sell likes often click into random other businesses on facebook so they don't look obvious. But they don't engage.

I've got 2344 fans...the fans who engage are a small percentage.

No and that is super clever.

BTW This is in here and totally off topic, but pertains to marketing via photos, Our elopement on Sunday week told me just now she found us on Pinterest. I would LOVE to shared her email about all the stress and how overwhelming it was to even put together a simple ceremony someplace and how they didn't want cheezy Gatlinburg or Poconos, so I am thrilled, I went in and added some more pix to Pinterest...

So don't forget PINTEREST PEEPS!

The wedding we did yesterday was about ready to give up. She said she spent 2 days looking for someplace to get married and was about to turn the computer off when she tried one more time and there we were. I did not ask what she was using for the search that she did not find anything (or perhaps it was nothing that appealed to her).

AAAHHHHHHH....I have fallen behind on pinterest. Ok, thanks for the kick in the be-hind.

I also have some new pictures of an elopement to post and yesterday we did an amazingly beautiful beach wedding. I won't have those pictures for a week or so because they used our professional photographer. I saw the pics on his camera monitor and they are amazing!

agree.   I posted a picture yesterday that has gotten a ton of attention.  Of my hubby putting up the 'no vacancy' sign for the first time.   People loved it.

They didn't like the  perfectly framed picture of the coffee cups on the porch overlooking the ocean, signalling the start of the good weather.

So this hypothesis just popped into my head -- "Facebook" likes pictures with people in them more than pictures that don't feature people....

I have had over 750 looks at my most recent post - a picture of DH hanging the no vacancy sign.  Plus a bunch of new 'likes' on my page.   Prior to that, my biggest post had around 350 looks.

I have to stop thinking about it. Really. We just got over 500 fans and about zero if them ever share anything I post no matter how fun or cute or what. Jb shares my stuff. Guests? Never.

Friends just got a puppy. I told them to pose the dog everywhere around town and post a puppy pic every couple of days. They are getting liked all over the place.

But, good for you! Glad you get these blasts every month or so, it really puts your info out there.

I rarely get shares and pretty much it's the same people who 'like' my posts. Mostly past guests. I haven't had a runaway like this in a very long time. I was on vacation for 3 weeks and didn't post, so when I got back, my new posts were barely seen.

I have gotten reservations from new people on FB, otherwise I wouldn't be spending so much time trying to figure the blasted thing out. Just last week, I did my usual departure speech and comment about liking us if they're on FB and she said "oh we already are...that's how I found you!"

You just never know. I'll keep plugging along. Now, I really need to spend more time doing a newsletter, but I tend to put it off because it's more work than just doing a silly post on FB. UGH.

Wow, that is crazy!  It's very frustrating, I agree.  I stopped trying to figure it out.
