I read your crazy person stories with wonder.  We have (until now) had the most wonderful guests.  The one who needed a room and was happy to sleep in our storage room for $50.  The ones who told us at breakfast how their electricity had gone off, but it's ok, they thought it was romantic.   All great reviews.

Until last night.   They shouted, "anyone here????" rather than ring the bell that has a sign next to it saying, "ring bell for innkeeper."

She was chatting on the phone while Hubby waited to check them in.  And waited.   And waited.   Then when they saw the room (the least expensive room in the house), they balked.   "Where is the ocean view???"   Right out this window.   "That's not the one in the picture!!!"   We have many rooms and many pictures.   I can offer you a room upstairs for a higher price with that view.    "I wouldn't pay a higher price for this place!!!"   Ok, then how about I refund your deposit?  "Fine!!! This is unacceptable!!!! I can't stay here!!!!!"   Don't let the door hit you in the big, entitled, overdressed butt on the way out.

The best part is, I know they could find a room in town, but they won't find a nicer one than the one they turned down.

You've got my number!   I am generally not near a computer on the weekends.   And stuck in front of one all day on the weekdays.  Y'all help me get through the day.  I have an office job an hour and a half commute away from the inn.

My latest saga is one of those  "we're always learning" sorts of things.

Guest's flight was cancelled on Friday. So we rescheduled for Saturday. Cancelled her excursion.

Saturday night we get another call, she's been bumped from the rescheduled flight. We rebook that room with a walk in and reschedule her for tonight.

Another call tonight. This time pretending she's never talked with us before because dh answered this call. She says oh the rooms are too expensive and goes to hang up.

DH reminds her we've been holding the room for 3 nights now. Silence.

She's says ok she'll be here in an hour. DH tells me this and we decide to call her back and tell her don't bother.

No sense in having someone here who's being drug here against her will.

But now we won't be bumping reservations again. You can't make it? That's a cancellation. Rebook with a new deposit.

Welcome welcome!

I will give an amendment here however, a pita is one who stays with you, these people were simply insane and a nightmare on wheels! I am so very glad they did not stay with you Beachie, then the PITA baton would be all yours... yes we pass it around, like a hot potato, in fact.

Does anybody know who has the baton currently? My guess would be Maddie, since she seems to have a permanent place of honor on her mantle.

I really don't think it's me right now. But... After dh spent 20 minutes talking with a guest today about the health dept and food safety and why we have the sign up about guests in the kitchen I was startled to hear this loud noise which turned out to be his wife, in my kitchen, running a blender. With him standing right there.

Sometimes I think my job right now is learning patience.

  I am so sorry.

Good for you to hold your ground and not let it get you down.

We had wedding guests one time, every room booked by the wedding couple.  At check in, One guest said to another

'What a dump, is the place across the road any better?'

'No! Actually THIS place is better --- if you can believe it.'

(grimace) 'This is going to be a LONG weekend.'

They both sauntered off on their high heels. Talk about mean girls!!

I tell you, in my denim skirt, apron and sneakers, I sat in my little innkeeper room and cried ... and fumed ... and cried some more.   They knew I could hear them.

Congrats... you are no longer a virgin! Don't worry, they slept somewhere worse or it cost them a heck of a lot more.  It's karma. They are always their own worst enemies.

Can you imagine going to the beachfront Hilton and saying, "I wanted a beach view!"   But you paid for a parking lot view.   "That's unacceptable!  Give me my money back!"

I, for one, congratulate you on holding the line. Nothing burns an innkeeper out faster than caving. The very few times we have done that, we have regretted it. Sometimes I think standing up to someone BEFORE they become your guest, is like 1000 times more empowering than most anything else.

We've caved on other stuff.   Late check outs, early check ins, kids, smoking (outside).  But people who dis' our house???   Nope!

...and you don't get that icky, " I have been taken advantage of" feeling?

We have added fees or policies over the years that give us a way out of most caving opportunities. Arrived early- room isn't ready or we aren't ready- you can leave your bags in the library. Want to check out late- $75. Want to smoke- on the lawn away from the house.

The one we struggle with still- but I think the last one was the last one- is kids under our age limit of 10. We are raising the limit later this year to 12. This keeps the 8 year old kids far enough away from the limit to say no comfortably- we hope!

Our latest one was a request to book 4 rooms for 1 night on a minimum stay weekend. We don't cave on these any longer. As we went back and forth I asked about how many guests there were and they were planning to have a bunch of kids sleep on the floor!

Glad we didn't cave on the one night and then have to back pedal on the number of guests. (The next question after what dates is always how many guests but I was only told about the adults!)

As it was I did what arks says is a no no. I said no to everything. There was no middle ground I could meet the guest on so I gave them another inn's number.

So you helped solve their problem by giving them a referral. That's good. Hospitality is about trying to solve guest's problems, and that's what you did. Hospitality doesn't mean you always lose and they always win. It just means you try to help.

We have the b&b rack card from the association at the ready for most every walk-in so they can find the place that's right for them. Our price point isn't for most walk-ins and we know it, so the faster we can help find them a bed, the happier everyone will be.

We thought perhaps they were hoping for an upgrade.  They booked the cheapest (by $50) room in the house.  He offered them our empty better room, but at full price.  That's when they started yelling.   "I wouldn't pay $50 to stay here much less $50 MORE!"   aholes.

I'm not really sure what anyone hopes to accomplish by that kind of attitude. Do they think you'll attempt to appease them somehow when they've already made it clear this isn't for them?

It's not like your website showed them something that didn't exist.

But now you don't have to worry about them contaminating the breakfast area!

And dh did the right thing and he survived his first arrogant SOB! Smooth sailing for the rest of the season!

My husband told me that as soon as he saw the jewelry and the phone, he knew this was a bad fit.   LOL

Our town has no actual hotels.   If they wanted the Marriott, they were in the wrong place.   Our rooms are bigger than most of the B&Bs in town and we have the second or third best views.   So they won't find anything better.   As nice, definately, but not better.

Oh well.
