Today was the last event for the Growing Healthy Communities grant my City got. It was to cover a 6-month period.
We had health fairs and examples of how to make healthy meals using the food given at the Lord's Pantry (soups with the recipes) They had some health and exercise classes. The population segment we were trying to get of course did not come (except to get the free stuff). But the health & exercise classes were well attended and the community garden (all produce will be weighed before it goes to the Lord's Pantry and the goal is to taise one TON of produce.
Tonight we had a healthy cooking class. I demoed how to make my Gillum House Rolls (fat-free) - everyone was surprised at how great they tasted with no fat and no salt. Then I demonstrated my Surprise Muffins. I could not believe how many of them did not know how to make sour milk on demand. They loved them. I took a batch that had red raspberries in some, blueberries in some, and chocolate chips in the rest. I added chocolate chips to the ones I was making there. NOTHING came home with me except the batch of dough for rolls. I will make some of them in the morning for my band member guest.
I had some postcard stock so printed the recipes on each side of the post cards - that went over REALLY great. It was a good ending to the grant activities (other than the produce that is)
This part is rant - some people from town and slightly out of town were on FB tonight dissing the city. Nothing ever changes, nothing gets done. Yet I never see ay of them at any of our work days, planting the garden, building the shed at the garden, any of the clean-ups we have done, not at any of the programs or activities at the park. All they do is run their mouths. They thought the 3.7 million Budget the City has was outrageous for a city this size - whatever do we do with all that money. Seeing that and then going to the cooking class and seeing the eagerness in the faces of those ladies and the one young man who was there made the jerks stand out even more - as jerks.
