18 years ago today, July 3, 1996 the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast was officially open for business.
When we opened, I heard a lot of "Who is going to come to Shinnston?" Even to this day, people notice the license plates on the cars in front of the B & B. The nicest question I was asked was at least 5 years ago. My City Manager asked, "What happens to the B & B if you quit or die?" My 3-guestroom B & B is a recognized part of the economy of the City - by the people who matter anyway.
 
Congratulations! Our Independence Day is July 5th. We'll be starting our 14th year.
Your city was and is lucky to have you.
 
Congratulations. We thought we'd last 15 years tops in this business, but maybe we'll make 18 too.

Hip Hip horay! wow that is great ! Congratulations. It would of been music to your ears to see a city does know you are there. I imagine you put a lot of time and hard work to get it there.

The City cannot miss knowing me. I am at City Hall all the time. Have been City Councilman, am on several Boards and Commissions (had to come off of one when I became City Clerk) and now as City Clerk, they need my signature!
Yes, it WAS nice to hear I am an economic factor and recognized as such. The Community Development Director is currently running a series of ads promoting events in the City. 15 seconds when the TV station goes into a commercial break, then 15 seconds before programming (selected programs for best bang) resumes, there is a commercial featuring 2 of the businesses in the City. Each of us paid $100 to participate. We helped pay for the ads and we get good, professionally shot ads.

Thank you, Everyone. It has been a fantastic ride - and I ain't done yet! Things have changed considerable - from guide books to web sites to mobile and social media. When I first opened, I was jumping for joy to have 6 room nights in a month! Can you imagine that? And we will not even discuss the change in rates! Funny thing though - the guide book rates and directory rates were about the same up until about 4 years ago. at which time the Internet Directories went stratospheric in rate jumps (of course the guide books are long gone - even with the horses which had a print book until a couple years ago).
