Salem officials cracking down on Airbnb, Uber

SALEM — Salem city officials say they're not in a sharing mood. — unless people who offer strangers rides for pay get taxi licenses, and unless people who rent out extra rooms in their houses get a bed and breakfast permit and actually offer breakfast. ...

So glad a few cities are getting the message.  airbnb seems to compensate their members in a hurry.  Really, what we need is a lot more media exposure warning the public.  There are very few marketing sites that require any kind of legality.  The owner is on his own to get the proper permits, etc which all of us do.   Even then there are a few crappy places operating.  And visitors have the right to complain to the proper authorities.--------or trip adviser.!   Be great if neighbors started complaining, wouldn't it? I can remember back a few years  our hotels started using "bed and breakfast" on their bill board signs.  A few phone calls to the hotel association and  it stopped.   Do any of your hotels offer "bed and breakfast"  or they just say  "breakfast included".?

There have been neighbor complaints in New Orleans which only gets in the news when there are big festivals in town.  The city seems to be trying but it takes a lot of manpower when there are so many.  If they would make the fines CUT DEEP in the pockets and broadcast it loud and clear, some will hear and either get licensed or stop.  If the fines are not substantial and the manpower not there, nothing will change.

Some states, made it illegal to use the term. FL has (so I heard) strict rules about the use of Inn, B&B and the like.  FL got that knocked down fairly quickly.

Unfortunately, the city of Salem has very few b&bs, but since it's the state capitol, hopefully some folks in the legislature will listen. We need this on a state/federal level!

Sounds like they are doing it right. Let them do the same as the other businesses in their space and have at it.

::Two thumbs up!::
