I need a break at this time of year. We've been going crazy for months and we've got 2 more months to go.
Took off for a couple of wonderful days! Yippee!
Lazed around this morning but still had to clean rooms as we walked out the door right behind the check outs the other day.
Took my shower, got dressed and looked outside. 2 cars already in the parking lot at 11:30.
So hard to come back from vacation!
But! At 9 this morning I put up the 3pm check in sign. So far, no doorbell ringers so I've been able to get the rooms cleaned, laundry started and able to sit down for a few.
Did notice one car had their clothes all over the parking lot. Looked out again and they were changing their clothes. In the parking lot.
Not looking out again!
Going to go download my photos and enjoy making a photo album for my mil.

Do not look out the windows! Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil!
Good for you...keep that sign up 24 hours a day!
By the way, do you have a picture of your sign to post here? I'd like to see how others do it.

It's when they start using the bushes around the parking lot as their private outdoor toilet that I get upset.

This year we scheduled our break after Labor Day and we closed up tight for the week after we return. We usually have to hit the road running in the B+B when we return so this will be a new experience for us. And I am SO READY to call it a day with more people in the house. As nice as they have mostly been....I think I've reached my tipping point as a full-time innkeeper.

Here's mine. Works like a charm. I did have to change it a bit last year and add the huge arrow because no one could find the bell! If that doesn't deter them and they arrive early, I answer the door if it's convenient and I want the check in over with to get on with my day. If it's not convenient, I don't answer. It's that simple.

We have to remove the arrow from the door before check in! If we leave the arrow and the sign, the bell gets rung.
I'll take a photo of it tomorrow.
We took it down already as we had a planned early check in.

Funny, I had a beautiful wooden sign carved that said "No Tours Today, Call to Schedule A Visit." I hung it right over the brochure rack on a post outside the front of the building. They'd take a brochure and then come up to the door and ring the bell. If I was inclined to answer and stepped out, they'd said that they didn't want a tour, they'd just show themselves around. NOPE!!! I took the no tour sign down and now just put up the one that says "We're running errands to get ready for your stay. We'll see you back at 3pm for check-in." Does the trick, they all walk back to their car and I sit and enjoy my lunch or get my cookies baked or whatever else I have to do between 1 and 3pm. Even if that includes watching HGTV with my feet up because you get me from 3pm until I go to bed and not a minute before unless I'm ready.
Do they ever still ring the bell and say they don't need a tour, will just look around?

No. I think I don't get a lot of tour requests because this city is filled with historic homes, several of which are open for tours. Also, this is a very unassuming house from all appearances outside, with nothing special looking about it. I'm lucky in that regard :)
