this is a new record for me!
i was out walking, saw a sign at a little place that rents mostly weeks and weekends near the ocean. 'Housekeeping Help Needed - by the hour - Call xxxxx' I dialed up on a whim and a man answered. he said 'I'm at the house right now'. i said, 'so am i' ... so i walked up to the door. man came to the door.
felt a little weirdly uncomfortable, so stood talking at the door rather than go inside.
he told me $14 an hour, cash, plus any tips and it's sporadic. i thought 'maybe' - but i was not liking the under the table arrangement. wondering if i'd actually get paid or what if by some chance i got hurt - for sure they don't carry workers comp.
he said, 'if you're interested you've got the job, starting right now.'
just then a woman came to the door and said 'the house is all done.' then pointed to a big, gas powered weed wacker leaning on the house and told me to get started on the patch of grass and crazy tangle of weeds on the side, very thorny, look like wild blackberries.
'that's not housekeeping' i said. 'you're fired' she said and turned on her heel. they never even asked my name, and i never got theirs.
wow

OMG! We have worked so hard to be good employers. My days of disrespecting are hopefully long gone.

'landscapers' in the area get $50 an hour and up - they clearly don't want to pay that. i never asked my housekeepers to tackle thorny bushes ... so i was more than a little surprised. if you want gardening help, that needs to be discussed.
more importantly, her attitude was bad, his was creepy.
i have a feeling i totally dodged a bullet, as you say. and i pity whoever they get to 'help'. i wonder how often the sign is up.

.
the way they were behaving, i would in perpetuity.

Wow! It sounds like your instincts were right on from the start! Isn't it amazing how crazy some people are? Fortunately they will not be your employers. If I were you I would be skipping down the street with joy! LOL

Oh brother...you definitely didn't want to work for them Sound like a couple of real weirdos.
