Review partial quote: "The pull out sofa could use a better mattress so we put a few blankets under the sheets to make it more comfortable for our daughter."
Do I take this to heart? In my experience, I assume a pull out sofa bed is going to be uncomfortable. I also assume 12 year olds can sleep on anything. When anyone asks about the room, I say it has a pull ot couch, but whoever sleeps there needs to have a strong back because it's just a pull out.
Is there such a thing as a comfortable sofa bed mattress?

No, I don't think there's a comfortable sofa bed mattress. A new one would probably be no improvement. If you have a place to store it, though, you might consider a foam topper or something people could put on top the mattress before putting the sheets on.
I wouldn't bother, though. As long as people know in advance that they're sleeping on a sofa bed, they know what they're getting. Really, I don't find them too bad for a night or two. More than that, though, and I'd want to put some sort of additional padding on it.

There are comfortable ones out there but they cost big bucks. They don' t have that bar that jams into your back when you try to sleep. We have a small loveseat sofa bed. I always would put a piece of HEAVY DUTY ply wood under the mattress so they could not feel the bar and then I put a foam topper on the mattress. Never got any complaints that I know of.

Thanks. This daughter was 11 or 12 years old. Honestly, a night on a sofa bed wouldn't kill any kid. ( I wonder if this is the same one that gathered her daughter and ran inside when I said, "I have to ask you not to throw rocks into the pond." I said it really nicely. I was kind of proud of my niceness.)

We have a cottage with a pull out sleeper sofa. We put a foam pad on it and it makes for a much better sleep. In one of our suites we have a much more comfortable sofa with chaise and it makes into a double bed. It's from I K E A and we have an even larger one in our innkeepers quarters for friends/family.

I have the same thing i one of my rooms and I always tell people exactly what it is and say it's only really suitable for children and your teenagers. Then it's their choice.
I do have an old fluffy comforter which I put under the sheet just to make it a little more comfortable.

when i was a kid, for about 4 years, my parents slept on a sleep sofa. too many kids in too few rooms! i honestly don't know how they could sleep on it, especially my father. i never heard any complaints from them; my dad said after being in the navy he could sleep anywhere. being the youngest, i'd go in some times and lay on the bed. but not for long. it was so uncomfortable ... and i was little. ugh, you're right ... a bar in the back and it had a thin mattress.
i didn't have a sleep sofa at the b&b, i had a twin bed that i fitted up to look like a day bed. much much more comfortable than a sleep sofa for sleeping but only for one person. i also had a single folding bed and a cot. not terrific, but some slept on them.
a foam topper sounds good. can you fold up a topper inside the bed or would that ruin it quick?

We take the bedding off, but are able to fold the bed back into the sofa with the pad still on the mattress.

We put memory foam-gel topper from Costco - it makes big difference. The only problem is that the bed will not hide in with it - so storage is important.

Yes- pay attention and respond to the need. No- don't take it to heart.
Which ever suggestion you heed- make a change and thank them in your review response. Let others know that you made an effort to upgrade a seldom used bed that should work better for the next guest that needs it. Then, of course, pay attention to the next few guests to use it and see how you did.

When I bought my sofa bed. I also bought a special mattress for it. Then I put on a non hypo thick mattress pad. We found that most love it. . 8 out of 10 people ask me what kind of mattress do I have as it is so comfortable .You do not feel the bars or springs. At first shot I used a feather bed over the mattress. But soon learned that was not safe so bought a thick non allergic one. Works great for young and old.

Yup, we do the same thing. Whenever we have an adult on the sofa bed we haul out the memory foam topper to make it more comfortable. Unfortunately, as you mention, the sleeper will not close with the topper so that arrangement is a bit cumbersome. In our case, the sleeper is used so seldom that it's not worth it for us to upgrade.

I'm with someone else who suggested the memory foam toppers. $100 will transform any old mattress. I don't know about it fitting on top of the mattress and being able to fold up into the couch tho. You might have to store it separately.

You will not be able to fold up into, but the topper is not that heavy.
