I am sure they got info from this forum. What they didn't get of course are all the wonderful stories and great things that we love about innkeeping. This makes me feel very upset, I have to say.

About 15 years ago my brother and sister and I went into business with our best friends David and Linda. We had a restaurant with gift shop. After a week dealing with the public, Linda turned to me and confessed in a whisper, "I hate our customers."
But yes, not something you want them to know, as you're putting on your best smile and acting like you enjoy every single one of them.

Has anyone else seen this article on Yahoo titled "We can't stand you and other confessions from a B & B owner"?
I read this, too - the comments were enlightening. I'd wager most people reading it are not of the age that they know that "Bob and Emily" were the characters from Bob Newhart's show prior to 'Newhart', the ones who were in the finale of that show when Bob woke up from his dream of innkeeping. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgdUWXf8jJk
The article is such an obvious hoax.

The truth, that we really like 99.9% of our guests will not sell a story. It is crap like this that makes me hope no innkeeper will ever write a book about guests, because the nice guests will be termed boring and the few crap guests that will sell the book will be a black mark on the industry. "Tell ALL" books have to be sensationalized or they do not sell. I am just grateful it is only on Yah oo

Confession from "an owner" make them all think it is one B&B that has these view points. Carrying a weapon and collecting adult toys with gloves on. It is an article, but it has truth in it. Every business has unhappy people, it is not rocket science, so the person probably heard it said, or read it, and decided it would make a good story. It has plenty of comments that show people are reading it.

They know most people don't want to read good news. They're looking for what will get their article the most hits.

Right. And the title is "Confession" and that is always an instant read.

We’ve only pointed a gun at a guest once, but we know a fellow lodging owner who shot a guest’s car. Don’t push your luck.
OMG!

For all the people who responded with comments about never staying at a B&B:
  • Do you think hotels *ever* wash the covers or blankets?
  • Do you think the hotel staff aren't happy to see your whiny self walk out the door?
  • Do you think they're not talking about you?
  • Do you think perks aren't given to nice guests? Just high flyers?
I will say the whole stalking thing that someone on here used to do creeps me out. That innkeeper who tracked, in real time, what pages people were looking at and even then came on here and made comments about knowing where we all lived after some of us looked at her website. That's creepy.
I would never pull a gun on a guest. Not that we don't know that innkeeper, too!
There was enough truth but the person who wrote it isn't an innkeeper but just trolled around finding complaints and then wrote them up.
I'm not surprised by the comments that seem to imply that if someone is paying you either shut up and do what they want or get out of the business. Those are the people who burn us out.
But, there were some lovely comments from people who go to B&B's and like them. Thank you lovely people!

Man, oh man...and I thought I was burned out. Not even close to this, thank God.

Honestly, this is completely over the top. Are their guests we talk about after they left? Sure! There are guests we loved that we rave about and guests that just didn't even have a modicum of respect for us or our work. But this is absolutely true of almost ANY business. You don't think that the hairdresser talks about you when you leave? You don't think that the real estate agent talks about you when they are at home? Everyone talks about those people who are "outliers" on both ends of the spectrum. Don't want to be talked about other than in wonderful terms, don't disrespect others, leave them with a good impression and don't stand out. If you walk into my private bedroom past midnight to ask me for the wifi password... you are going to be talked about. If you lie that your GF and I see you eating bread... you are going to be talked about.
Am I happy to see everyone? Nope. I have my good days and my bad days.
Am I happy when you leave? Nope. I have those I hate to see leave and yup a small contingent that I'm insanely happy they left.
Do I fake it? Sometimes... yes. But we are all human, we aren't happy all the time. Someone left an unkind review and well, I'm going to be depressed and I'm going to have to fake it. You ring my doorbell twice and can't manage to wait patiently as I walk to the door, I may be grumpy. Take a real interest in what I am saying, show me you are glad to be here, trust my advice and generally be great and you will lift my spirits and get all the help in the world.
I don't lie about what is homemade and what is store bought. Breakfast is fresh daily, does that mean I baked the English muffins... nope! I didn't churn the bread, plant the beets for the sugar and I certainly didn't harvest the coffee beans.
Do I have rules? Yup. They are for our mutual protection. I'm trying to do the best that I can. Life has rules too. Ever rent a car? You should read through their rule book.... you signed it, didn't you?
I don't have a gun or a rifle in the house and you aren't bringing one into mine either. I do have the ability to dial 911 though.
As for lying... I think we can all tell when you are lying to us. And it's amazing that your dead relative managed to pull through once we told you that the cancellation policy is still in effect. You know, if you had a little self respect, you wouldn't pull that kind of thing in the first place It disrespects those who really have allergies and real emergencies and makes life harder for them when you fake a service animal when they really need to bring them.
I don't have the time to stalk people. I wish I had that much time for things like that. I'm having enough trouble finding enough time to do the things on my plate already.

That was really ugly. And I resemble some of those remarks. But most of the guests that we've encountered like K said 99% were nice guests. Yes, we are all human, but if you get to that height of unhappiness-its time to quit or never ever be an innkeeper...

This has to be a hoax. No innkeeper in their right mind would put out this kind of trash for the public to read. But you know...once its out there..it will never go away.
Will give a bad name to innkeepers. :-(

what winds me up is people who say "25 years ago I stayed in a BB and there was no tv and I was expected to sit family style so I would never stay in a BB again - because we all are exactly the same and nothing changes in 25 years!

I guess I still don't understand the comments here, as most of what is said on that article is said here daily, other than the we are armed, part. Just spread out a bit more.

Well I don't think we say it as bluntly as they did and some of their mentions were really off the wall. We say it to vent here and hope the world doesn't see it. But...we all know if it is out there they can.

We vent about the .1%, that article made it sound as if we thought of our 99.9% that way. It is an article geared to put people OFF of B & B inn my opinion.

I think it's because the article slanted it so that it only showed the negative side. It made it sound like innkeepers hate every moment of their day. It was sensational journalism. We do say negative things here, as well as wonderful positive things also. That article had absolutely zero positive.
