I use coasters. I'm strict in my home about them.
But what about in the inn?
Yesterday, I was greeting a couple who were having tea. The tea cup was on the coffee table right next to the coaster. I had to resist the urge to lift the cup and place it on the coaster.
Do you remind people? Or do you just suck it up and hope it doesn't make too much of a mark? Or did you give up years ago and furnish the place with "distressed" antiques?

I have causally lifted their cup while chatting and put a coaster down. Now a days I have put glass on top of all furniture. It is much easier to wipe glass then try and get marks out of good furniture.

No one knows what coasters are. I've found coke cans all over the dresser, peeling the finish off, and the coasters sitting right there with spare change on them.
Or, someone will stack their wet cans and bottles on books, magazines, the guest book, etc. But never on the coasters.
I'm thinking of removing them. Most hotels don't provide them any more.

My tabletop is leather and shows everything. So I chastise - wag a finger - speak firmly - and ask them why they haven't read the 50 page rule book I left in their room. Basically I leave them laughing and in compliance.

are you kidding? You know people don't care.

Most don't even know what a coaster is for...is correct. If you have things in your place you don't want damaged, then glass or plastic on the surface where cups, glasses will be place.

If it's a fine piece of furniture, you must cover the top with something. We use glass on the tables in our guest rooms. The dressers and smaller wood stands & tables get a cloth or placemat. Heaven forbid, sometimes even a doily.

I gave up a LONG time ago. I have them under the glasses, so they are there. But people don't care about my furniture. Which is one good reason to not have good furniture. Of course then they will complain that you don't have good furniture.... catch 22.

I have covered all the tables with glass but there are an antique dresser and a mahogany piano that I have put coasters on. Usually I end up moving the coasters around to cover the rings left from the guests who haven't used the coaster.
