Did you read his other article? In it, he describes 5 different types of clients. The one that we need to understand is called BZ "customers who cost more to serve than they are worth, and who have little if any growth potential..."
What I like is basically he says that we either need to:
1. Either cover your costs and/or
2. Encourage defection.
I love that. It's true, some customers are just not worth the effort, they cost more to retain the relationship than what they bring in. So sometimes you just need to cut the rope.

Better than a T-Shirt that says "encourage defecation", because that would be a crappy shirt :D
