We are shipping back a guest's wallet. It was found in the common space hours after the guest checked out. I opened it to see who it belonged to and it's full of credit cards and money. Should I document exactly what's in there before mailing it? In case it doesn't arrive back to him intact? I can't say that everything is in there as it was when the guest lost it. Just what was in there when it was found.
I'm talking 9 credit cards, driver's license, library card, medical cards, etc. (Who has nine credit cards?)
And I have no idea how he got on the plane back home. Maybe he had a passport.

A guest once left her entire wallet here when checking out - I found it in the common sitting area. I got ahold of them by cellphone when I found it later in the day - I thought it had belonged to another guest who was sitting out there reading. She told me they were already several hours away and asked me to mail it to her house so that when they got home it would be there. I told her that I would send it FedEx requiring a signature so it wouldn't be sitting on her porch while she was still traveling. Her daughter arranged to be there to sign for it. I didn't document anything, just sent it back exactly as I found it in the sitting area. Could someone have taken something, sure. I would recommend sending it back requiring a signature to be sure that they get it and you have a receipt that you sent it.

this has happen to us twice. First time we mailed it register mail so he could follow it on line. Also so it was cleared from us. The next time we did it differently we phoned them and said this was the way we would send it and bill their credit card the cost of mailing. There were most pleased that we would do that for them.Sent a thank you for sending it back.

I would ask the guest if they want you to list the items before mailing. Some people may not like the idea of you going through their wallet and this way the onus is on them.
You could also take a photo of it before mailing.

What purpose is served by listing the contents?

So if anything is missing, they know you did not take it (at least one would assume) Like the inventory list when you place an order - a checklist.
