Reviewing my cc statements I see we're now being charged a fee whenever we don't enter a tax amount on a business credit card. We usually skip this input as the tax is all rolled into the amount we charge. Well, THAT little oversight cost us $13 last month. So now I either have to enter 0, and I'm not sure that is acceptable, or I have to cancel the transaction and start over, take the tax out, rerun, add the tax in at the appropriate time.
It never ends.

What do you mean? I don't get it..
Whenever we get a cc that is registered to a business we are asked by the machine to enter the tax amount separately. If I don't do that, if I just skip entering that when the cc machine asks for it, I am being charged by the cc processor for 'Corporate card - insufficient information entered'.
It amounted to an additional 1% fee for that month.
I had no idea.
We are in the process of leaving our processor because they keep adding these fees and charging us for everything, including extra fees for accepting debit cards.

I think some companies do the math and decide they'll make more off new fees from the people who don't bother to check their statement than they'll lose from the few who do, and switch processors.

Interesting. I never had the machine ask for anything like that. If anything here the corporate cards could be tax exempt (being so much govt in this state).

Government isn't tax free.

I suspect that the card issuers cut special deals with the corporations for their corporate card business, which require that card issuers break out tax separate from the rest of the charge (so that the corporations can more easily keep track of what they are paying in taxes), which requirement the card issuers pass on to the processors, who in turn pass it on to us lowly merchants... If we don't play the game properly, we might get dinged by the processor. Something like that.

If they present a govmt credit card and/or the tax free form they are. That is what is required. Federal and local govmt.

Yes I've been surprised that the per diem state employees I've had aren't exempt from state sales tax. There is a HUGE list of things that are exempt. I'm surprised they didn't exempt themselves!
Fear of criticism, no doubt.
In my state the legislature has put a constitutional amendment on the November ballot to let them appoint a special committee to set the salary of the legislators. What an idea. They appoint the committee, and when their committee raises the legislators' salaries they get to say we didn't raise our own salaries. It was that darned independent committee!
The amendment will be defeated, of course. Not because the voters have studied it and made a good decision. It will be turned down because our voters ALWAYS vote no on constitutional amendments, because that's easier than reading the amendment and deciding on its merits.

They love to slip them in.

I just got a flyer from our processor promoting Apple Pay w/ the new iPhones. Of course there is a monthly cost to use this technology on top of all the other fees.

Did they tell you if there is a maximum per transaction without signature? All the "non-signature" versions around here have a $100 maximum. Otherwise it's card-in-hand.
(And personally, I think ApplePay has a lot of hurdles. The first being that only 1/3rd of users are on Apple, about 1/2 are on Android and likely won't consider installing it. So you will eventually have another standard come out, which won't be compatible, etc. etc etc. And you still have Chip & Pin (EMV) to do anyway.)

Not an Apple person. What they are providing is Chip equipped. Still not buying into this. I am sure even more fees will be involved.

I enter the entire total, then if I get asked the tax I give them the total tax (thankfully the math isn't too hard when I have their receipt in my hand) and they are charged for the original number I entered. That may work for you, and is one less operation you have to perform
